Departmental Overview

The Program Coordinator provides organizational, administrative, logistical, and communication support for the Art of Writing program at the Townsend Center for the Humanities. Dedicated to fostering excellence in the practice and teaching of writing at UC Berkeley, Art of Writing's programming includes undergraduate courses, graduate training workshops, a writing tutor program, and campus events.

Since its establishment in 1987, the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities has encouraged an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship, fostered innovative research, and promoted intellectual conversation across academic fields. The Townsend Center is committed to enriching the existing wealth of intellectual resources at Berkeley through an array of fellowship and grant programs designed to support research and scholarship at all levels of the university community.

  • Responsible for the organizational, administrative, and logistical elements of the Art of Writing program, taking the lead role in implementing program goals.
  • Duties include maintaining a comprehensive schedule of program activities, and ensuring that key processes are on-track and that appropriate follow-up steps are taken
  • Scheduling and making arrangements for meetings, workshops, and events; processing payments and reimbursements
  • Distributing and organizing key program materials, including student evaluations and course syllabi; developing and maintaining program archive; maintaining and updating contact information and mailing lists; providing assistance to program director and associate director
  • Assists with communications and publicity for the program
  • Drafts and disseminates electronic and print communications, including correspondence and publicity materials; responds to inquiries on behalf of the program; processes applications and prepares for selection committee review

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to take initiative, identify and pursue follow-up steps, and navigate administrative hurdles
  • Ability to work effectively within UC Berkeley's large and complex organizational structure
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the humanities and skilled writing, and a desire to support teaching and learning

Salary & Benefits

This is a part-time (20 hours per week), hourly, career position dependent upon continued funding.

Other Information

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010. The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at:
