Overview
The International Center provides immigration assistance advice and intercultural programming to a population of 2400+ international students and faculty/research scholars. The Center is authorized by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the US Department of State (DOS) to issue non-immigrant visa documentation. The staff works to ensure that students, faculty/scholars are in legal status while either studying or working at Tufts. Additionally, the staff works to ensure that individuals have a productive, successful academic or work and personal experience at Tufts University.
What You'll Do
Under supervision, the International Student and Scholar Advisor is responsible for orientation and ongoing cultural adjustment and immigration for individual international students advising related to visas, travel and maintaining legal status while studying and working in the United States. Provides services in assigned area of the university ensuring compliance with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of State (DOS). Responsible for conducting semiannual orientation program and design and implementation of workshops and other assigned programming.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for oversight and issuance of visa documents for incoming international students in assigned area.
- Advises and counsels undergraduate and graduate students providing appropriate immigration advice throughout the year. Advises recently graduated students about optional practical training (OPT) and OPT for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) graduates and other visa issues, ensuring visa compliance for OPT and STEM applicants and proper reporting.
- Registers and tracks individuals in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration SEVIS system, ensuring compliance with USCIS requirements. Compiles, analyzes statistics and provides reporting and incites to senior management about incoming students.
- Provides expertise, consultation and advice to department staff, faculty, deans, admission offices and academic advisors on issues related to academic success concerns and legal status of international students.
- Designs and leads assigned programs and workshops for graduate students related to US work options, immigration, intercultural and/or practical skills. Responsible for conducting semiannual orientation program. Serves as a liaison to different intercultural programming offered by the Center handling planning, organization and implementation of programs.
- Consults with colleagues locally and nationally as well as researches and references laws and manuals on issues related to the legal status of international students, faculty and scholars.
- Responsible for updated communications reviewing forms, letters, Center handouts and website and making edits to ensure undergraduates and graduates have accurate, timely information.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- 2 years of related experience
- Knowledge of immigration law and regulations
- Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, immigration system applications such as SEVIS, Ellucian ISSM and ISD- e-Scholar
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong written and editing skills
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills
- Demonstrated analytical and research skills
- Flexible
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and project assignments simultaneously
- US citizenship or permanent residence as required to serve as F-1 Designated School Official (DSO) and J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior international living or work experience
- Prior experience working in higher education settings, especially in a student services or student advising capacity
- Intercultural communication skills
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
- Requires some evening and weekend work.
Pay Range
Minimum $51,400.00, Midpoint $64,250.00, Maximum $77,100.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
