  • Under administrative direction of the College Dean reporting to the Science Laboratory Manager oversee the day-to-day operations of the science laboratories and provide technical support to faculty, staff and students. Responsible for care and daily operation of the greenhouse, marine aquariums, Kemp Mineral Museum, Planetarium, GIS Laboratory, and Gilbert Gleason Natural History Museum

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with student employees in preparing chemical reagents and equipment for the instructional science laboratories
  • Inventory and maintain chemicals, specimens, models, cultures, and laboratory equipment
  • Prepares biological media, grows and maintains viable bacteriological cultures for Microbiology and Biology classes as needed; care and maintain live and preserved organisms for laboratory experiments
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of teaching laboratories, laboratory preparation rooms and related storage areas
  • Ensures updated Safety Data Sheets are readily available and that the MSDS Online database is current
  • Receive and distribute incoming supplies to appropriate areas as assigned, to include the purchase of supplies locally as required
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and correspondence
  • Print posters for faculty, students, and other university schools/departments
  • Performs related work as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related science field
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, relate in a professional, helpful manner
  • Ability to relate to a diverse population and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations
  • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action, resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other department staff, students and the public
  • Efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
