The Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Programs (formerly International and Area Studies) provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of international and global issues. Comprised of three undergraduate majors (Global Studies, Political Economy, and Cognitive Science), two graduate group major programs (Global Studies and Asian Studies), and several undergraduate minor programs, ISSP is a unique intellectual domain which serves approximately 1000 undergraduate, 100 minors, and 25 graduate students. The individual major programs are led by faculty directors under the leadership of an Associate Dean. ISSP is committed to undergraduate teaching and is an integral part of the Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters Sciences (L&S).
- Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
- Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.
- Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for multiple interdisciplinary programs
- Advises students on declaration process and conducts required workshop for eligibility to declare.
- Oversees student entrance evaluation, including evaluation of prerequisites and grade point averages (GPA).
- Assist students in the development of a program concentration, taking into account individual goals.
- Advises students in multiple majors on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
- Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental /college requirements.
- Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/scholarships/competitive internships.
- Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
- Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as declaration of majors or other enrichment programs.
- Plans, designs, and provides special events for students, such as welcome receptions, commencement, career development, etc.
- Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/ scholarships.
- Develops and maintains all written documents and forms for majors including student handbooks, application materials, advising materials, departmental forms, general catalog information and web site content.
- Creates, maintains, closes and archives student files according to unit schedules, written job standards and the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Keeps track of all student contacts with file notes, maintains up-to-date student progress worksheets, processes petitions, and calculates GPAs.
- Maintains DARS records.
- Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).
- Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary program director(s) and/or faculty committee(s) which oversee program direction and approves policy/administrative changes.
- Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues and on departmental/ school/college and university policies and procedures.
- Experience advising students in interdisciplinary academic programs. Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Ability in problem identification, reasoning. Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Ability to multi-task and maintain multiple projects through conception, development, and execution. Ability to take ideas and develop those ideas into an action plan including timeline, resource need, outcome, and evaluation. Interpersonal skills. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Masters degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $50,400.00 - $65,000.00.
