Departmental Overview

Housed within the Division of Student Affairs, the Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) is the primary department on the UC Berkeley campus charged with developing and implementing programs and strategies to improve academic preparation, expand educational opportunities, and ensure access to higher education for low-income, first generation, and underrepresented students. Working in partnership with local schools and communities, CEP improves academic achievement and expands post-secondary educational opportunities for students who face significant barriers to college.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded educational outreach program serving high school students who are low-income and first-generation-to college (LIFG). UB provides free year-round services and activities that motivate and prepare students for success in education beyond high school. The academic component of the summer programs focuses on college preparation, collaboration, equity building, and project-based learning.

The 2024 UB Summer Program is providing a select group of 50 students from California the opportunity to live in student residence halls and take enrichment and research-based classes on the UC Berkeley Campus. Students also engage in exciting culture building activities, academic and college-preparation workshops, and academic field trips. Academic programming will take place Monday - Thursday during the day or the evening, contingent upon room availability on the UC Berkeley campus.

CAMP COUNSELOR TIMELINE:

This is a 6-week assignment, with a commitment of training and preparation prior to launch, and requires commuting and residential full time with evening and weekend work requirements. This position start date will be June 6th, 2024, and ends on July 19, 2024. Staff training and onboarding will take place from June 6th, beginning at 9am -5pm on the UC Berkeley campus, until June 7th.

Staff will be required to begin serving students on June 10th at the UC Berkeley campus, until the final date of hire, with exceptions for Saturdays and other scheduled breaks.


Responsibilities

Residential Management:

  • Create, model, and sustain a college-going culture for students.
  • Manage and facilitate daily wake up calls and lights out, suite meetings, meal reminders and snack preparation, community meetings, and ensure students are within their dorms at lights out.
  • Act as a role model, maintaining physical and social boundaries with scholars while cultivating an environment of belonging.
  • Stay overnight on-site and support UB full time staff in responding to day and night emergencies.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call daytime shift (when scholars are in class) and/or on- call nighttime shift by responding to emergency phone calls and conducting rounds.


Student Supervision:

  • Supervise 50 high school students (minors) in residential and academic settings for varying activities.
  • Implement UB residential and academic curriculum for activities and events.
  • Supervise scholars' structured academic time, unstructured free time, and recreational activities.


Program Support:

  • Work closely with UB program staff and fellow residential advising staff to create and deliver a high-level residential experience.
  • Support program activities including movie nights, study hall, game nights and competitions, and other various activities.


Professional Development:

  • Attend Upward Bound residential and summer support training etc.


Administrative Duties:

  • Complete administrative duties as it relates to surveys, incident reports, scheduling, event planning and coordinating, tracking, etc.
  • Report, document, and follow up on any scholar misconduct as per UB and university policies, expectations, and core values.
  • Ensure Completion of RA deliverables (e.g. final survey, etc.).


Other:

  • Complete other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity and passion in working with first generation/low income/underrepresented students, preferably with a cross-cultural awareness.
  • Understanding of issues faced by low-income, first-generation (LIFG) students.
  • Position requires work leadership, ability to work collaboratively with inter-personal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively and in an intensive and fast-paced summer schedule.
  • Must be able to work effectively with UB staff and students, across all organization's levels, internally within the program and externally within department.
  • Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications; ability to incorporate technology within the scope and needs of the position.
  • Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills.


Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • One year of coursework at a university, college, or community college and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with high school aged students in an educational context.
  • Willingness for creative engagement (i.e. ice breakers, impromptu social activities).
  • Knowledge of program activity experience working with high school students in an educational context.
  • Student centered program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, and creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Previous experience with youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus policies and procedures.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $5,000 over the duration of the appointment.

  • This is a 6-week, variable hours, limited (temporary) position that is not eligible for UC benefits.
  • This position runs from June 6, 2024 - July 19, 2024.
