Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, the Assistant Coach will work as directed to coach areas including throws, horizontal jumps, vertical jumps, and combined events. Must have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse group of student athletes, staff, and alumni. High level of knowledge and understanding of NCAA Division 1 rules and regulations is also preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Developing and implementing a year-round training program for the designated area.
  • Interact with the student-athlete and his/her family. Provide counsel, guidance, and support as necessary while consistent with team philosophy. Oversee the academic success of the student-athlete and assist with academic problems.
  • Recruit student-athletes that can contribute athletically to the program and reflect the academic standards of UB.
  • Effectively recruit student-athletes within assigned areas including evaluations, phone calls, contacts to high school/club coaches, and setting up unofficial and official visits, and making home visits and evaluations. Work with the Director to determine priority students and scholarship offers.
  • Various administrative duties will be assigned as the discretion of the Director which may include, but not limited to:
    • Program fund raising
    • Oversee academic progress of designated student-athletes. Monitor progress, meet regularly with academic advisor.
    • Equipment ordering and inventory. Work with the equipment room manager and Director to order new equipment, evaluate current equipment for damage/needed repairs, keep accurate inventory. Work with both parties to ensure accuracy of orders.
  • Must be able to travel.
The position is a full-time, 12- month. Work schedule includes evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience coaching at the collegiate level.
  • Demonstrate successful development of athletes.
  • Demonstrate successful recruiting.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to compliance with NCAA, Mid-American Conference, University and department rules and regulations.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Must maintain valid driver’s license.
  • Computer proficiency in word, excel, publisher, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area.
  • Proven track record of developing student-athletes to a conference championship and national level.
  • Three or more years of successful experience working in a Division I Track & Field program.
  • Understanding of NCAA rules compliance.
  • Experience evaluating prospective student-athletes academically, athletically, and characteristically.
