UC Berkeley's School of Law is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, ever exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. The Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law is a group of scholars, activists, anti-discrimination/equality body legal professionals and private lawyers from six continents working together to address the problem of discrimination and inequality. Founded in 2011 by a handful of European and Berkeley Law scholars, the group has expanded to include more than 900 members on every continent but Antarctica.

The goals of the Center are to facilitate the study of comparative equality between scholars, activists, and anti-discrimination/equality bodies around the globe; to nurture the work of emerging scholars and activists, and the work of scholars and activists from underrepresented groups and developing countries; to connect the work of global legal scholars and anti-discrimination/equality body workers in the enforcing anti-discrimination law; and to serve as a multinational virtual think tank on comparative equality and anti-discrimination law, seeking innovative approaches to the problem of inequality.

The Program Administrator will support the Berkeley Center for Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law by performing and overseeing the administrative functions of the Center, including event planning, travel planning, assistance with financial planning, assistance with oversight of student workers and volunteers, participation in strategic planning, participation in development, and assistance with publications, including online publishing.

  • Administers a defined operational program or activities for the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law, which may include some of the following functions: finance, facilities, payroll, space planning, student services, event support, communications, informational technology or safety.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day coordination and general administrative operations of Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law
  • Serves as the administrative point of contact for the center and responds to all administrative inquiries; liaises with IT/Media/Facilities on program needs;
    • Tasks are of moderate scope and complexity, and exercises independent judgement within the defined guideline and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Responds to requests for information and ensures that records and information are current and accurate.
  • Supports and coordinates meeting and event logistics to ensure that room reservations, catering, materials preparation, and outreach to appropriate constituents are executed accordingly.
    • Liaises with the Business Services Office, Event Services Unit, and other departments at Berkeley Law, as well as external constituents (if any), when planning and executing events.
  • Provides support for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs
    • Creates and monitors registration site for CLE conferences/webinars
    • Creates and sends invoices for conference benefactors
    • Helps promote and market CLE programs
  • Processes financial transactions and functions as a resource on issues such as researching complex financial discrepancies, escalated customer service problems and vendor concerns.
  • Processes business transactions including all invoices and reimbursements in BearBuy, and researches and resolves vendor issues as required.
  • Provides grant and gift administration support to assure accuracy and compliance in managing requirements and reports to funders
  • Collaborates with internal resource experts, such as Development staff, to properly manage donations and apply expenditures.
  • Researches prospective sponsors for the program, including governmental, foundation, and individual sponsors.
  • Facilitates communication with funders and sponsors as directed by the Faculty Director
  • Assists with travel and lodging arrangements for invited speakers, staff, and students.
  • Purchases and processes reimbursements for supplies and other items.
  • Collaborates with internal and campus-wide financial experts on best practices and to properly manage reimbursements and expenditures.
  • In consultation with Center Director and internal resource experts, administers the day-to-day program budgets and approves expenditures within established parameters.
  • Coordinates with internal and campus resources and stakeholders to develop and submit funding proposals, and manage funds to ensure that expense are appropriately applied according to funding terms and UC policy.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state fiscal requirements and internal campus policies, and makes recommendations to maintain compliance as necessary.
  • Prepares and/or assists with drafting written and electronic materials.
  • Creates and maintains listservs and mailing lists by managing a contact database.
  • Creates and maintains web and social media presence, and resolves website challenges in coordination with Information Security & Technology (IS&T) and other various departments to keep information accurate, timely and flowing between students, faculty, alumni/friends and the school.
  • In collaboration with students, staff and faculty, develops newsletters, publicity materials, annual reports and other publications for the Center and its programs
  • Ensures that the program's web presence is optimized, and that web content is dynamic and current.
  • Coordinates and monitors the day-to-day administrative duties of the student program assistants and volunteers.
  • Supervises and trains student assistants and undergraduate research apprentice students.
  • Liaises with HR and consults with Center Director to hire and onboard student assistants and volunteers to support the Center.
  • Coordinates and facilitates student assistant and URAP interview processes.
  • Assists with coordinating URAP assignments and monitors student engagement
  • Delegates appropriate tasks to student assistants as needed
  • Gathers and analyzes financial and other resource data; prepares reports or analyses of operational activities, evaluation of current and proposed services, etc.
  • Produces documents, reports, and analysis of programs as required
  • Establishes and reports on event budgets
  • Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures, processes and guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains a system for capturing and tracking institutional memory.
  • Engages in professional development and training opportunities as needed.
  • Performs additional duties within the scope of this classification as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, fundraising processes, website management, finance and accounting, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Solid verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, exercise initiative and sound judgement, while effectively executing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office, Google Drive/Docs; Experience with online calendaring systems and video conferencing platforms.
  • Ability to learn new computer programs and software systems.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, to take initiative and work independently as well as on a team.
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to attend evening or weekend events.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.16 - $32.99, Steps 3.0 - 7.0.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
  • This position is eligible to work remotely up to one day per week.
  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010. The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at:
