Departmental Overview

Tuberculosis has been a major global health concern for well over a century. Although many potential treatments have been vigorously pursued, conventional strategies have failed to eradicate TB infection and, in fact, the global threat has grown over the last couple decades, potentially stemming from the fact that treatment attempts have neglected to take into account the deeply integrated, symbiotic-like relationship between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its host that has developed over 40,000 years of human/bacterial co-evolution.

The Cox Lab (housed in the UC Berkeley MCB Department) aims to understand the key mechanisms that dictate the M. tuberculosis-human relationship with the goal of breaking these ties, targeting either host or pathogen factors to eliminate M. tuberculosis infection and use that knowledge to contribute to solving a steadily increasing threat in global health.

Project Development
  • Under the supervision of Dr. Jeffery Cox, lead development of new initiatives in an area of antibiotics resistance and new technologies.
  • Under the supervision of Dr. Jeffery Cox, develop written summary and proposal of concepts, identify and engage with potential project partners, develop and execute a schedule for project initiation activities, identify and develop project financing
  • Provide input into program goals, and implement program metrics
  • Identifies, cultivates, and implements opportunities for public engagements
  • Prepares and edits report and presentation materials as it relates to administrative and project planning and development of initiatives

Project Managing
  • Managing events, meetings, conferences, and related activities
  • Drafting or organizing content for proposals, managing the preparation of graphics, technical material, and budgets, liaising with the Sponsored Projects Office and grant administrators to meet pre-award and post-award requirements
  • Manage project logistics and transactions
  • Analyze, draft and edit appropriate program materials as contractually directed by funding agencies or donors; annual progress reports and renewal materials, fund close-out activities
  • Gathers data and prepares assigned (i.e. educational and international) project budgets and financial reports for funding which may be complex. Performs recharge administration
  • Website maintenance

Financial Management, Analysis and Budget reconciliation
  • Manage all budget related issues in the laboratory (post-award management)
  • Manage grant preparation, collect information, references, and biographical profiles. Liaison with department and university grant offices to ensure deadline compliance and proper package preparation (Pre-award management)
  • Manage all laboratory purchases and joint-laboratory Biohazardous Safety Laboratory III purchases
  • Manage all documentation regarding laboratory accomplishmentsmaintaining CVs, providing materials for grant renewals, proofing and submitting manuscripts, providing support and coordination for grant renewals, maintaining laboratory website.
  • Using campus and systemwide policy knowledge, provide information and counseling for fellowship application preparation.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge or ability to learn common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Solid ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and in a team environment with the ability to reach consensus on project goals.
  • Working knowledge or ability to learn University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, account and fund management, personnel management
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience in training grant and proposal writing and management

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
