Departmental Overview

Residential and Student Services Programs (RSSP) is part of the Division of Student Affairs under the direction of an Associate Vice Chancellor. RSSP provides and manages student housing, custodial and maintenance services, security/safety, capital renewal projects, self-operated dining services, campus ID card as well as early childhood & education services for students, faculty, and staff. RSSP also conducts a summer conference and year-round catering/events business and manages faculty apartments.

RSSP's annual revenue exceeds $260,000,000, with a $100,000,000 operating budget, and the department employs over 2500 career, limited, contract and student employees creating a "culture of care" for students, guests, customers and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

SPRINKLER FITTER

  • Under general supervision, the Sprinkler Fitter is responsible for the installation, alterations, maintenance and repairs of all fire protection and fire control systems including the unloading, handling by hand or with power equipment and installation of all piping or tubing, appurtenances and equipment pertaining thereto, including both overhead and underground and underground water mains, fire hydrants and hydrant mains, standpipes and hose cabinets and sprinkler systems, sprinkler tank heaters, air lines and thermal systems used in connection with sprinkler and alarm systems, also all tank, pumps connected thereto, CO2 and dry chemical for fire protection and halon, and all work associated with Mist Systems, all Clean Agent Systems, all Early Detection Systems and/or Air Sampling Systems.


ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Adherence to the scheduling of work through the work management program (WebTMA) is required. Consult shop supervisor and/or lead for technical information. Support maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Keep accurate and up to date testing records for all systems supported.
  • Define and describe materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods and task sequences. Serve as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or supervisor. Obtain materials and equipment as required.


SAFETY

  • Performs all work while conforming with EH&S health and safety policies, OSHA and other applicable federal, state and local fire, health, safety, emergency-preparedness, pollution-prevention policies, RSSP policies and procedures and University of California's policies and procedures, including Code of Conduct, IIPP (Safety and Health Procedures), Hazardous Materials Communications Program, Health and Safety Manual, as well as any other document authorized by the RSSP management to have bearing on employee safety and conduct.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Skill and ability to operate pipe machines, drills, grinders and other hand and/or power tools needed to perform skilled related job tasks.
  • Skill to select and utilize correct tools, techniques and methods for handling specific piping projects by applying thorough knowledge of codes and the skills of a craftsperson.
  • Demonstrated ability to join dissimilar metals using the proper methods, techniques and materials.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (sewers, manholes, crawlspaces, and under floors) and to gain access to areas that normally require stairs and ladders to perform job tasks.
  • Ability to safely move supplies and objects up to 75 pounds with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to interact in a positive manner with campus community, including students, building managers, academic personnel, and craft personnel, in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to track jobs to completion and prioritize requirements; able to work and support shutdowns and project schedules to minimize interference with others.
  • Ability to read information from equipment manufactures manuals, service requests, layout sketches, blueprints, appropriate state and local government codes, trade-specific manuals and practices, and to determine how the fixture or equipment should perform.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly over the telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to execute all job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Must have completed a five year sprinkler fitter apprenticeship program or equivalent.
  • Employee must possess three years journeyman experience in a comparable position or related experience in a university, hospital or large building complex.
  • C16 Contractors license
  • Office of the State Fire Marshal fire sprinkler certification
  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Must have or acquire and maintain AWWA backflow license or get a license within six (6) months of hire.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The hourly rate that the University expects to pay for this position is $71.46 (stepped rate).

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Skilled Crafts Unit (KB) between the University of California and the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council (ACBCTC).
