Tufts Dining is a self-operated food service provider managing a comprehensive collegiate food service program on the Tufts University Medford-Somerville and Fenway-Boston campus delivering high quality, contemporary and innovative food and hospitality services to meet the various needs of students, faculty, staff, administrators and visitors in a fiscally responsible manner. Our team operates a progressive resident dining program for approximately 4000 students as well as a responsive retail program and a distinctive university catering program for a campus community totaling 5500 undergraduates, 1800 graduate students and 2300 faculty, staff and administrators.
TUFTS CATERING OPERATES 7 DAYS A WEEK. WORKING WEEKENDS AND EVENINGS WILL BE EXPECTED
The Catering Assistant will provide outstanding service to the Tufts University Community by engaging in a variety of catering service functions and related tasks. The Catering Assistant will consistently greet, welcome and interact with customers and coworkers in a warm, respectful, professional and friendly manner to promote an atmosphere of hospitality and familiarity. S/He will be knowledgeable and have the ability to set up independently catering services that range from chilled and hot buffet set ups, reception table displays, coffee, beverage and alcohol bar set ups. In addition to setting up these services, the S/He will also be expected to serve from these stations and greet our guest. S/He will be knowledgeable about the ingredients and preparation methods of the foods served, especially with regards to the presence of potential allergens. S/He will have full working knowledge of formal plated meals and the style of service that we use to execute them. S/He will also execute all essential pre and post event tasks for the Catering Unit. S/He will be responsible for presenting foods for service including occasional light food and beverage preparation and heating up foods. S/He will be expected to contribute to a respectful workplace and support all events that are not assigned to them when possible. S/He will also be expected to onboard Temp Agency Employees and treat them with respect.
Demonstrate the ability to work under periods of fast pace and high pressure.
All employees are responsible for punching in and out in accordance with department policy and standards. S/He must be given permission from a manager to punch in early or stay past their schedule "out time." All employees will adhere to posted schedule and all requests for time off will be granted based on business needs. In accordance with the CBA, schedules will be posted 14 days (excludes catering) in advance. Time off requests must follow proper procedure and will be approved/denied in accordance with department needs.
No requests will be honored for Senior Week, Holidays, Alumni and Parents Weekend, Commencement, Orientation, Matriculation, or Special Events during the Academic Year.
At least 6 months working in food service, retail or other customer service related business.
Must have tolerance for long shifts standing, walking, lifting, and executing various other repetitive physical tasks.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English in order to communicate effectively with management, peers and customers.
Must have good interpersonal skills with the ability to comfortably interact with customers and peers in a friendly and helpful manner.
Must be able to understand and execute basic food service sanitation and safety practices.
Must have the ability to take direction from leadership, to understand job requirements and show initiative in completing related job tasks in the service of the customer.
Must have an appreciation for teamwork and willingness to work together with peers.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This position may work up to 35 hours per week.
