Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Institute for Young Americans (BIFYA) is a research center located at the Goldman School of Public Policy. Its goal is to make national, state, and local policy sustainable and fair across generations. The Institute's mission is to lead a fact-based, non-partisan discussion about how best to invest in future generations, while promoting bold leadership among the Millennial and Gen-Z populations. BIFYA aims to develop research-driven policy proposals to equip policymakers, advocates, and young leaders with the solutions needed to ensure the long-term security and success of the next generation.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts quantitative analysis using Stata or other statistical software packages on administrative data sets and/or other incoming data.
  • Is primarily responsible for cleaning data correctly, doing primary analysis, and presenting the results in various formats (tables/graphs etc).
  • Summarizes and consolidates field research into lay terms for non-academics, and works closely with the Director to highlight connections with the Institute, its staff, and its affiliates.
  • Supports authorship of academic papers, policy reports, and other publications by conducting literature reviews, editing or drafting text, and preparing manuscripts for publication.
  • Seeks funding opportunities and prepares relevant grant proposals in concert with principal investigators.
  • Manages relationships with government and funding partners, including regular engagement and client management, troubleshooting issues, and being the main point of contact for those partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identify real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis, including cleaning new data sets and presenting data in various formats.
  • Demonstrated experience managing client relationships, managing projects independently, meeting project timelines, and communicating with internal and external stakeholders in a productive and timely manner.
  • Ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects with minimal supervision, including strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, including exceptional writing skills required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member required.
  • Undergraduate degree in public policy, economics, statistics, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training is required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of relevant post-baccalaureate professional experience preferred and/or related graduate degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience writing successful grant proposals preferred.
  • Experience working with large and complex datasets preferred.
  • Some knowledge and understanding of general issues of concern in higher education, labor economics, housing policy, health policy, public finance, and other issues with a great impact on young Americans preferred.


Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
