Pre-Health Professions Advisor

University of San Francisco

Job Summary:

Undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni of the University of San Francisco, who wish to pursue a career in a health profession such as medicine, optometry, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatry, physician assistant, veterinary medicine, require specialized advising with respect to academics (course selection, grades, choice of major), extracurricular experiences (clinical volunteer and research opportunities), timelines (admissions tests, application procedures, personal statements, and interview prep), emotional support, and potential, alternative career paths.

Job Responsibilities:

Advising pre-health students (prospective and current students, and alumni), regarding academics, experience, admissions tests, and application processes
Advising students transitioning from one major to another
Attending new student and prospective student orientation events to address pre-health at USF
Announcing / developing opportunities (clinical and research volunteer positions, employment opportunities), and visits from health professions program representatives (email, social media)
Communicating with Admissions staff regarding pre-health advising at USF
Updating prerequisite and FAQs lists for medical, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, physician assistant, veterinary programs, etc.
Coordinating / arranging practice interviews (one-on-one, and/or MMI)
Coordinating the writing and submission of committee letters of recommendation
Maintaining data and statistics on the number of pre-health students, applications, and acceptance rates, and reporting these to the Office of Institutional Research annually
Maintaining a health professions alumni contact list
Organizing the annual Health Professions Alumni-Student Dinner, and Pre-Health Professions Student of the Year Award
Planning health-related on-campus programming
Coordinating summer and gap-year health related internships for pre-health students
Maintaining the Pre-Health Professions website with the assistance of the Universitys webmaster
Visiting medical schools and attending annual health professions advisor conferences
Performing other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

5 or more years of experience advising and/or teaching undergraduates in a four-year college or university environment (experience advising about health career preferred).
Masters degree required.
Record of initiative and leadership in developing educational and advising programs for high-ability students.
Leadership experience in academic or administrative department.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to support and challenge a diverse population of high-ability undergraduates.
Ability to apply independent judgment and decision-making skills to issues related to university policies and procedures.
Proven success working in a collaborative environment.
Ability to assimilate and communicate information to a variety of audiences.
Deploy professional skills in advising, in collaborating with colleagues, to best promote the universitys strategic interests.
Working knowledge of health care professions programs requirements, application systems and procedures.
Prioritize and perform multiple tasks, meet deadlines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the university with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
Strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
Ability to interact with multiple constituents including students, faculty, parents, alumni, and employers.
