Within the Lawrence Hall of Science, The Center for STEM Pathways and Teen Research Programs deliver high-quality, hands-on research opportunities to youth in the Bay Area. We seek talented, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic STEM educators to mentor youth in STEM career pathways.

Job Summary

The main role for the position of the Teen Research Program Instructor is to facilitate programming in an engaging, supportive, and hands-on environment while supplying accurate scientific information. This may involve further reading or research on a STEM subject matter. This position will facilitate programs in an energetic, appropriate, and professional way that actively engages teen participants and manages a safe, accessible, and comfortable learning environment for all.

This position is an ideal opportunity for a Graduate or Undergraduate Student interested in the intersection of STEM and education. As a STEM instructor, you will facilitate fun, engaging, and meaningful hands-on science learning for teens. It is a great opportunity for professional growth and you will gain valuable experience in teaching about science, technology, engineering, and math to middle and high school youth.

• Develop an understanding of, and the ability to facilitate STEM Teen Research Camp programming in a fun, engaging, hands-on environment while supplying accurate scientific information. This may involve further reading or research on a subject or topic.
• Present programs in an energetic, appropriate and way that actively engages teens while managing a learning environment for participants' well-being and safety.
• Be responsible for materials management, including set-up, clean-up, and storage.
• Thoroughly understand building safety and security protocols and implement emergency procedures.
• Serve as an enthusiastic role model and mentor for teens.
• Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of UC Berkeley and The Lawrence.

Required Qualifications

• Experienced and excited to share science learning experiences with youth grades 7-12.
• Demonstrated creative teaching methods in informal or formal learning environments.
• Responsible, organized, and healthy work ethic capable of working independently and collaboratively with an educational team.
• Strong customer service and verbal communication skills.
• Basic skills using business software systems in completing work assignments, i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
• Required content expertise based on the specific program to which you are applying to teach (see below)--you can apply for more than one program title.
• Reliable, punctual, and available to work for the required dates and times.
• Able to traverse uneven grounds and lift up to 25 pounds (carts are available).
• For marine biology instructors only: current California Driver's License and 21 years old.

• CPR Certified.

Salary & Benefits

• This is a 100% Limited Appointment for three months - 5/6/2024 through 8/2/2024
• Non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
• Multiple positions are available.
• This is not a visa opportunity.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $23.90 - $31.80 an hour

UC Berkeley Campus High School Teen Research Program Instructors

• Training June 4 & 5, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Set Up June 6 & 7, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Instruction June 10 to 14, from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 1hr break daily

-Biotech Engineering: knowledge of and experience with CRISPR technology and related lab skills.

-Bioinspired Design: have taken Dr. Robert Full's Bioinspired Design course.

-Science of Social Media and Attitudes: research methods in social science or psychology, strong data skills.



UC Berkeley Campus Middle School Teen Research Program Instructors

• Training June 4 & 5, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Set Up June 20 & 21, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Instruction June 24 to 28, from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 1hr break daily

-Designing and Engineering Bridges: some structural engineering and/or physics background.

-Coding and Engineering Nano-Satellites: experience with Scratch and Python and some knowledge of satellite technology and/or astronomy.

-Body Systems and Biomedical Innovations: knowledge of human body systems and human health, e.g., pre-med coursework.

-Solar energy and Electrical Engineering: some electrical engineering and climate background.



UC Santa Cruz Campus High School Teen Research Program Field Instructors

• Training July 17 to 19, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Pack Up July 21 9:00 a.m.
• Instruction July 21 to 26, Sunday-Friday, residential at UC Santa Cruz

-Marine Biology: marine biology, including ecosystems and field and lab research methods, strong data skills, ability to traverse uneven surfaces (including climbing over rocks and boulders, hiking up and down trails on semi-steep terrain, and walking over wet and dry sand) and walk/hike 5-7 miles per day. Comfortable driving teenagers in a minivan or SUV. CA DL and over 21 years of age required.

-Field Ecology: environmental science, forest, or terrestrial ecology, including field research methods, strong data skills, ability to traverse uneven surfaces, and walk/hike 5-7 miles per day.
