Overview

The Department of Comparative Pathobiology supports faculty and staff who teach, conduct research, and provide diagnostic services to the small and large animal hospitals as well as outside organizations. Educational areas of emphasis include Clinical Skills, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Biochemistry, Organ Systems and Pathophysiology, and Veterinary Pathology.  Research areas include reproductive biology, neuroscience, and biotechnology.  Faculty provide anatomic and clinical pathology diagnostic services through the Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which supports patient care by the school’s hospitals.


What You'll Do

The Department Manager is responsible for the business and academic functions of the Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB). This includes the following: managing administrative and staff assistants and the lab coordinator, all of whom also provide support for academic faculty; development and management of the department budget; budget projections and labor reporting; and support for DVM and graduate students as needed in the department. Additional responsibilities include academic appointment renewals for full and part-time faculty and adjunct faculty, preparation of promotion dossiers, and interpreting, effectively communicating, and enforcing University and Department policies and guidelines for faculty and staff. The Department Manager works with the Department Chair in discussions about creating and implementing goals that are specific, attainable, and relevant for strengthening and growing the department in a rational and timely approach. Finally, the CPB Department Manager is the liaison between the chair and CPB personnel to communicate information in both directions, promoting inclusiveness in the department, and supporting the mission of the department.


What We're Looking For

Minimum Required Experience, Education, Background, And Certifications/Licenses
Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of experience in management and (or) human resources. Strong communication and administrative skills are required as well as advanced computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Adobe Acrobat Writer), ability to efficiently utilize internet, social media and emerging media. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without accommodation.


Additional Preferred Experience, Education, etc.
Five years in an academic management support setting, with at least one leadership role taken during that time. Management and supervisory experience preferred. Also, superior organizational skills, ability to work autonomously and with initiative, experience with hybrid work, strong attention to detail, ability to interact diplomatically with a wide variety of constituents and to work effectively as part of a team. This position is ideal for someone who is self-motivated, requires minimal supervision, performs efficiently to meet deadlines, sometimes under pressure during busy times, demonstrates good judgment with confidential information. Importantly, the department manager should be pleasant, approachable, and enthusiastic.
