Departmental Overview

The Center for Student Conduct is a department that reports to the Associate Dean of Students in the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students Office within the Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs aims to advance the learning and personal growth of students by providing leadership, services, and opportunities that enable students to succeed in and contribute to a diverse and global society. Responsibilities

The Senior Conduct Coordinator focused on restorative practices supports the CSC's mission to administer the UC Berkeley Code of Student Conduct through equitable practices that promote community-building and encourages mutual respect through the development and administration of a robust alternative resolution process. The Senior Conduct Coordinator will administer the CSC's Restorative Education Practices and Initiative for Alternative Resolution (REPAIR). REPAIR is an effort to empower UC Berkeley students and encourage student development by responding to violations of people, community, and institutional principles through the repair of the harm caused and by creating equitable dynamics for conflict resolution. The alternative resolution process and restorative practices that the Senior Conduct Coordinator administers will provide students and community members with greater autonomy in the resolution of student conduct referrals to CSC. The Senior Conduct Coordinator will create supportive, educational, and restorative resources for students who participate in alternative resolution through REPAIR.

The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert on administering restorative justice practices and processes in educational settings and particularly on college campuses. The Senior Conduct Coordinator will support CSC's commitment to student development and community-building by developing processes that center student engagement in resolving and repairing alleged harms. The Senior Conduct Coordinator will be capable of administering the Code of Student Conduct and restorative resolution practices in a culturally relevant way for UC Berkeley students, particularly for our underrepresented populations.

Student Conduct Case Investigation and Adjudication:
  • Serves as subject matter expert on the administration of restorative justice and/or alternative resolution processes and manages the day-to-day administration of the CSC's REPAIR procedures.
  • Assists in determining eligibility of referrals for REPAIR processes in consultation with reporting parties, responding students, and their supervisor.
  • Serve as the lead conduct coordinator on eligible alternative resolution cases.
  • Conducts intake and pre-conference meetings with participants to prepare them for direct conflict reconciliation processes, assess readiness for conferences, and identify additional supports for participants. Facilitates resolution conferences and other designed processes within CSC as needed.
  • Develops reconciliation-driven educational sanctions for informal and formal outcomes.
  • Facilitates reintegration meetings for students returning to campus from suspension and disciplinary procedures. These meetings may include participation of community representatives or impacted persons.


Program and Data Management:
  • Develops assessment metrics for the usage and efficacy of REPAIR.
  • Organizes record keeping and develops FERPA-compliant referral forms.
  • Prepares report templates that collect data on usage and qualitative experiences of participants.
  • Produces reports that review effectiveness of standard CSC adjudication processes compared to the REPAIR processes, with a focus on impact on underrepresented students and opportunities for further refinement of alternative resolution processes.
  • Identifies business needs, and recommends process improvements such as additional staffing, volunteers, and/or resources for the effective administration of all projects related to REPAIR to department leadership.


Research and Policy Analysis
  • Interprets and articulates Code of Student Conduct, Berkeley Campus Regulations, and other related policies (e.g., The Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Policy; Grievance Procedures; Time, Place, and Manner etc.) for members of the campus community, Office of the President, press, parents, and law enforcement officials. Reviews and makes recommendations for revisions to the Director and other campus administrators.
  • Works with campus stakeholders to design outcomes and educational sanctioning programming that are rooted in restorative practices and the repair of interpersonal and community harm.
  • Refines and streamlines case referral processes from all sources to effectively identify appropriate cases for restorative pathways and assigns staff and or volunteers to address the harm and meet with impacted parties.


Campus Liaison, Committee Work, and Other Projects:
  • Leads campus-wide collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including faculty, staff, registered student organizations, students and student leaders to promote and build support for restorative practices and identify additional partnerships to address community harm.
  • Explores partnership opportunities with external agencies and practitioners.
  • Prepares and drafts memoranda of understanding with various campus and external parties regarding the administration of alternative resolutions.
  • Partners with the Student Affairs Communications team to develop REPAIR promotional material and updates to CSC's website.
  • Carry out responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates understanding of relevant laws, federal guidance, and best practices in areas of importance to student conduct, including, but not limited to: FERPA, Clery, Title IX, the Dear Colleague Letters, etc.
  • Assist students, faculty, and staff by advising on avenues of redress or conflict resolution outside of the Code of Student Conduct.
  • Represent the Center for Student Conduct in campus-wide committees as assigned, some of which may take place outside normal business hours.
  • Conduct outreach and education programs for staff and faculty groups. Present on topics such as academic integrity, the conduct process, etc.
  • Facilitate important CSC projects, such as teaching CSC's Ethical Decision-Making Workshop, supervising interns, and/or participate in neighborhood meetings (some of which may occur outside normal business hours).
  • Assist CSC Leadership with response to audits, investigations, and media and data requests.
  • Prepare and redact student conduct records in compliance with FERPA.


Required Qualifications
  • Advanced level knowledge of and experience in student conduct administration.
  • Experience administering alternative resolution or restorative justice practices in educational settings.
  • Ability to analyze a conflict, identify root causes and key stakeholders, and assist parties in finding a mutually agreed upon resolution.
  • Ability to facilitate various restorative meetings ranging from two-person mutual responsibility mediations to large-scale community circles.
  • Experience in working with diverse populations with an emphasis on multicultural, LGBTQ, underrepresented, and underserved populations with strong cultural competence
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to implement trauma-informed practices and interviewing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal, counseling, and advising skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to have positive and productive interactions with members from every level of the campus community.
  • Ability to diplomatically handle difficult or urgent matters in a confident and proficient manner. This includes the ability to maintain equanimity and decorum in face of resistance or disagreement.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in a highly calibrated team environment while carrying out highly individualized work.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student conduct, student records, and sexual misconduct adjudication. Advanced knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable laws as they relate to the administration of student conduct including through alternative resolution or restorative justice.
  • Ability to develop original solutions to solve problems.
  • Masters degree in higher education administration, student services, or advanced degree in a related field with one year of experience in student conduct administration and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Conflict Resolution, or in a related area.
  • Advanced knowledge of student conduct and legal issues in higher education, particularly as they apply to due process, students with disabilities, sexual harassment, behaviorial intervention teams, the First Amendment, and rights/responsibilities of students.
  • Experience developing, implementing and administering alternative resolution or restorative justice practices in higher education.
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders to develop an infrastructure for restorative justice and alternative resolution processes on campus
  • Mediation experience
  • Experience with fraternity and sorority life.
  • Trauma-informed training related to Title IX.
  • Experience at a large, decentralized, public university.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Experience supervising volunteers, students (including graduate students), and professional staff
  • Experience producing year-end reports and strong data assessment skills
  • Deep sense of cultural humility and proven experience with educational equity


Salary & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is up to $75,000/annually
