UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension offers more than 2,000 courses per year in a variety of subjects both online and in the classroom. Extension's administrative departments and units include student records (transcripts), registration, scheduling, international student services, facilities, financial services, and the cashier's office. In addition to the main Berkeley center, it has responsibility for the maintenance and operation of regional centers in San Francisco (Spear Street), and Belmont and other leased facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
This position manages the academic and administrative operations for the UC Berkeley Changemaker-Oakland program, a brand-new program designed for 200 incoming first-year Berkeley students. Oversees academic quality, instructor relations, course scheduling, assessment, disciplinary processes, reporting, and inter and intra-department communications. Designs, conducts, promotes, and supports undergraduate learning and works alongside student advisor. Works closely with UC Berkeley departments and schools to research and assess educational needs and interests for first-year undergraduates. Develops programs, materials, and learning approaches accordingly, incorporating technology when appropriate. Establishes and maintains excellent relations with campus administrative departments, including the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Residential Life, and the Registrar. Also manages student recruitment and admissions, co-curricular programming, student orientation and events, budgeting, and finance. This program will be based on the campus of Mills College in Oakland.
The Berkeley Changemaker curriculum focuses in three areas critical thinking, communication, and collaboration to develop greater capacity for agency and impact in graduate's lives. Berkeley Changemaker is as much a community as it is a curriculum, and this role is important for making that sense of community felt by all.
- Establishes evaluation criteria for measuring desired results and impact. Student Experience and Co-Curricular Planning.
- Consults with and works alongside the program's academic advisor to ensure consistent application of policy.
- Designs and implements workshops for students (exploring undergraduate majors, study skills, etc.)
- Helps build a strong sense of community among students in the program.
- Works closely with residential life staff to ensure alignment between academic program and campus life.
- Uses considerable discretion to determine methods and procedures for current and new course offering and topics.
- Implements and administers program and relevant campus policy; interprets University, college (Letters and Science and College of Natural Resources) and program requirements, and may adjust or write policies and procedures either independently or in consultation with Extension or campus expert.
- Works with leadership to update courses to keep them in compliance with campus academic practice and policy; keeps abreast of academic policy within the colleges and its impact on the program's academic policy and student services.
- Plans and develops programs and curriculum, and adjusts existing courses and curriculum in an accredited and / or certified public education environment.
Curriculum Planning and Implementation:
- In consultation with campus departments and schools and with the Assistant Dean, determines program curriculum and course offerings.
- Coordinates with campus departments to ensure close alignments between FPF courses and their campus counterpart.
- Oversees new course and instructor approvals with campus departments.
- Assists the Department Director with new instructor recruitment.
- Establishes course schedules, optimizing facilities usage.
- Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for the program, staying abreast of curricular trends and policy on the main campus, making adjustments to FPF curriculum and policy as needed.
- Recruits, selects, orients, evaluates and supervises qualified accredited and / or certificate instructors.
- Manages academic quality improvement processes, including setting standards for course evaluation.
- Evaluates and adjusts course curriculum through student course and outcome evaluations.
- Reviews student evaluations and periodically visits classes to evaluate course content and instructor performance.
- Coordinates regular meetings with program instructors for ongoing discussion of quality improvement.
- Recommends changes in courses, methodologies, and instructors where needed.
- Manages resolution process for academic issues with instructors, students, parents, and campus partners.
- Oversees all instructional support processes, which include dissemination of contracts, submissions of all relevant paperwork, textbooks, AV support, etc.
- Responds to and resolves urgent situations such as last-minute course schedule or location changes, informing students and instructors of changes.
- Develops, prepares and reconciles budget for program(s).
- Provides regular reports and projections to senior leadership in the department.
- Recruitment, Marketing and Events Works closely with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on outreach strategies, and helps identify targeted institutions to meet organization's goal.
- Develops, oversees, and assists in all student recruitment activities and student affairs activities; facilitates student access to campus services and responsive and efficient service to all program constituents; participates in direct student academic advising.
- Oversees the development or update of marketing, recruitment and orientation presentation materials to students and campus staff; writes copy for the program website and other public sources; presents at various events and meetings.
- Plans and hosts events for prospective students, instructors, and stakeholders.
- Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
- Advanced analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the organization's policies and procedures; advanced knowledge of functional area and understands how work impacts other areas of public educational programs.
- Advanced knowledge of accredited and / or certificate program instruction and delivery methodologies, the organization, market and business strategies.
- Experience managing academic programs.
- Experience assessing the quality of academic programs and managing process improvement efforts.
- Experience developing new academic programs or courses to meet student or market needs.
- Experience managing a portfolio of academic or professional training courses from various disciplines and subject areas.
- Experience planning and managing events.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communications skills sufficient to represent the university in meetings with leaders and senior-level representatives of other organizations.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Continuing education in related field required.
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Preferred experience working in higher education with international students.
- Preferred 5 or more years experience working in higher education administration or academic program management progressively taking on greater responsibilities.
- Preferred full professional proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, German, Russian, Hindi, Portuguese, or French
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
