Position Summary:

The Research Specialist will assist the Principal Investigator and Principal Research Specialist with developing new, improved cultivars of canola, rapeseed, and mustard as well as associated fundamental and applied research with these crop species. Job duties include managing field-based experiments; managing greenhouse operations; and conducting oilseed quality analyses. Duty activities include planting, maintaining, and harvesting field plots and greenhouse experiments; evaluating field and greenhouse-grown experiments; preparing seed for planting; post-harvest seed processing; data entry and data management; and presenting research results at local, regional, and national meetings. Regional travel will be required to maintain and evaluate field trials. The Research Specialist will also contribute to the team effort by supervising and training hourly workers, maintaining stocks of supplies, photographing experiments, and performing miscellaneous clerical duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science or a related field.

Experience using computer software and applications for word processing, email, internet searches, and data organization.

Must have a valid drivers license and be able to successfully pass a drivers record check.

Must have or be able to obtain an Idaho commercial pesticide applicator license within three months of hiring date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Science in Plant Science, Agronomy or a related field.

Experience with agronomic research, plant science field research techniques, and field data collection.

Experience with operation of small plot farm equipment, calibration of pesticide application equipment, and operation of motor vehicles including the ability to tow and back trailers loaded with equipment.

Experience with greenhouse plant husbandry

Experience with supervising hourly staff and students and prioritizing their tasks to ensure that work is completed in a timely manner.

Experience with statistical analysis of experimental data.

Experience with chemical analysis of oilseeds.

Ability to communicate effectively, follow safe working practices, work on own initiative, work alone and cooperatively in small groups, effectively supervise employees, plan projects to achieve goals of overall program, work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, identify and solve problems, prioritize tasks and manage own and supervisees time, establish and maintain effective interpersonal and working relationships, work cooperatively with faculty and staff from other programs, and work extra hours when required.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Physical ability to perform assigned duties; may be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances; may be required to work in adverse environmental conditions, i.e., dusty, hot, or cold conditions outdoors.

Must be able to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move heavy materials weighing up to 30 lbs.
