The Sponsored Projects Office at UC Berkeley is a central pre-award, non-financial post award office responsible for the institutional review, approval, and submission of grant and contract proposals to government and non-profit sponsors. SPO also negotiates awards and contracts on behalf of the University with these sponsors and issues outgoing subawards under Berkeley agreements. We currently have an open position at the Research Analyst 4 level, and we are seeking applicants that like to challenge themselves and are serious about building their knowledge of research administration at a comprehensive research institution.
- The Research Analyst 4 (RA4) within the Sponsored Projects Office at UC Berkeley holds a senior position within the office and helps to develop, implement, and improve office procedures in support of the campus' research enterprise. The responsibilities associated with this position include:
- Independently reviewing, approving, and submitting proposals to governmental and non-profit sponsors
- Ensuring that all proposals processed are in compliance with campus institutional requirements prior to submission
- Uploading relevant proposal information and correspondence into the campus proposal database in a timely manner after submission to sponsor.
- Working with campus PIs/department RAs to approve and submit information requested by sponsor representatives prior to the issuance of awards.
- Negotiating award terms and conditions to ensure compliance with University and campus policy
- Establishing outgoing subawards under campus grants, cooperative agreements and contracts
- Obtaining PI/department informed consent prior to accepting any award terms and conditions that may pose a programmatic or financial risk.
- Obtaining all necessary compliance approvals before the set up and release of negotiated awards.
- Processing internal advanced fund advance requests and grantee approved no cost extensions
- Interpreting and providing guidance on University and sponsor policies related to grants and contracts to campus principal investigators, departmental administrators and less experienced SPO staff.
- Serving as a subject matter expert on a variety of sponsored project policies and procedures at campus training events for campus PIs and RAs.
- Mentoring and training new SPO Contract and Grant Officers in campus/University policies related to sponsored projects.
- Maintaining in-depth knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply Federal Acquisition Regulation, Code of Federal Regulations, sponsor-specific policies, intellectual property policy, conflict of interest requirements, publication rights, application of indirect cost rates and other complex concepts in research administration.
- Establishing and maintaining positive professional relationships with sponsor representatives.
- Assisting SPO Managers with pre-award data that may be needed for external or internal auditors in their examination of active and terminated projects.
We are seeking an individual who can provide the Sponsored Projects Office with a broad perspective on the grant proposal, award, and administration cycle. We are looking for someone that has substantial experience in two or more of the following areas:
- Interpreting proposal guidelines and reviewing/submitting proposals to a variety of external sponsors.
- Negotiating awards (grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts) received from a variety of external sponsors.
- The ability to write and execute outgoing subawards
- Identifying and resolving pre-award and/or post award obstacles to successful sponsored projects
- Excellent organization and oral/written communication skills
- An interest in and demonstrated ability to learn new skills and competencies quickly
- Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills
- A high level of proficiency in using a variety of computer applications.
- The ability to multi-task and follow through under tight deadlines is critical.
- The ability to work independently as well as a member of a dynamic professional group.

- A demonstrated commitment to process improvement as demonstrated by past performance
Salary & Benefits
Annual Salary Range: $85,000.00 to $94,000.00
