Overview

The faculty in MBM are united by a common interest in the biology of microbes (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites) and the effects of microbes on human and animal hosts. The microbial pathogens program studies microorganisms that cause infectious diseases, with emphasis on rigorous analysis of these pathogens and the immune responses that restrict them. Program investigators direct detailed studies of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and eukaryotic parasites. Research topics include structural analysis of virus entry, viral evolution, viral oncogenes, intracellular bacterial pathogens, microorganisms that cause diarrhea and pneumonia, intracellular signaling, pathogen adhesion, genetic determinants involved in susceptibility to infection, vaccine development, and identification of novel antimicrobial agents

What You'll Do

The overall theme of the Tan laboratory’s research centers on understanding how the pathogenic bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis exploits environmental cues to survive and grow in its host. We aim to elucidate what environmental signals M. tuberculosis senses and responds to, how it does so, and means to perturb critical nodes in the system to shift the balance of infection in favor of the host. We seek a highly motivated individual who is enthusiastic to learn, engage, and work with the group on questions related to this research focus. Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician will conduct a variety of experiments following established procedures/protocols, which may include bacterial and mammalian cell culture, fluorescence microscopy and quantitative image analysis, PCR and electrophoresis, DNA and RNA extraction and characterization, mouse infection models, and other laboratory techniques. In these capacities, the Technician will also record test results and analyze data using basic statistics and various software. In addition, the Technician will help monitor the functioning of laboratory equipment, organize and maintain logbooks and supplies, and assist in maintaining and monitoring animal colonies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous research laboratory experience using microbiology and/or molecular biology techniques is highly preferred.
