Position Summary
The University at Buffalo is looking for an outstanding candidate who will serve as a member of the media relations, internal communications and crisis communications teams, working in the broader Division of University Communications.

The Public Affairs Communication Manager will help enhance the reputation of the University at Buffalo and increase awareness and support of the university by communicating internally and externally about major university initiatives benefiting students, faculty and staff, as well as the university’s position on issues of concern to internal and external stakeholders.

You would be on a team responsible for:

o Collaborating closely with administrative and academic units throughout the university as appropriate, and quickly developing an understanding of their needs in order to provide strategic communication counsel

o Contributing and responding to a wide range of proactive and reactive issues-oriented projects and crisis communication situations

o Strategically evaluating major university initiatives, events, programs and new programs to identify those with the greatest potential for internal communications and news media interest, with an emphasis on increasing understanding of institutional priorities

o Developing high quality content for internal and external audiences, including news releases, talking points, university statements, web content, presentation decks and social media

o Ensuring consistency, accuracy and excellence in quality and content of messaging in all materials, particularly written content

o Serving on UB’s crisis communication team

What we are looking for:

To be successful in this role, you must have a proven track record of developing engaging, accurate and informative internal or external communications. You must exhibit superior judgment and writing skills, and have experience building strong stakeholder relationships. The ideal candidate will pay meticulous attention to detail, have excellent time management skills and the ability to understand and distill complex subject matter quickly. The nature of the work requires an ability and eagerness to juggle multiple responsibilities and assignments during the course of the day. Media inquiries and issues affecting the university occur at any time. As a result, work outside the stated operating hours of the University is normal in this role.

The Division of University Communications (UC) is responsible for providing strategic leadership for university marketing and communications, including internal and external communications, media relations, brand management, crisis communications, social media, marketing strategy, trademarks and licensing, and creative design in varying mediums, including traditional print and digital platforms for the University at Buffalo (UB). The division is highly visible and its marketing and communication strategies serve to advance the university.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION -
o Bachelor’s degree with three years of experience or master’s degree or professional certification with one year of experience.

EXPERIENCE -
o Proven track record in organizational, news or higher education communications
o Exceptional writing, editing and communications skills for internal and external audiences, including experience with AP writing style
o Media relations and news-writing experience, including writing and editing news releases, statements and building relationships with members of the news media
o Maintain high standards and quality of work during times of high-pressure and tight deadlines
o Comfortable working with complex and sensitive information
o Strong research and interviewing skills and ability to seek out relevant information from internal subject-matter experts and tailor messages to various audiences
o Must be able to respond to multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize work with a focus on university priorities
o Sound problem identification, judgment, resolution and decision-making skills often in ambiguous situations
o Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office computer software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint )
o Working knowledge of social media landscape, channels (including Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Reddit) and ability to monitor the social media landscape for potential issues
o Excellent interpersonal skills and strong personal ethics
o Exceptional communications judgement, a service mind-set and a collegial approach to working with colleagues and media partners

Preferred Qualifications
EXPERIENCE -
o Five or more years’ experience in organizational communications, media relations, journalism or issues management
o Experience working in a complex, decentralized environment
o Experience in absorbing large amounts of information and distilling it into compelling, clear, and consistent messaging
o Thrives under pressure and can handle multiple projects in a demanding, deadline-oriented environment
o Experience with reputation management and promoting/protecting organizations through integrated communications strategies
o Experience in writing for crisis communications
o Willingness to learn, develop and achieve new skills to enrich personal and professional development
o Ability and high comfort level working with all employee levels, including senior decision makers
o Strong judgment skills with a demonstrated ability to examine issues from multiple angles, think critically and recommend solutions
o Evidence of working independently and within a team
