Position Summary
The
Counseling Services department at the University at Buffalo is seeking a
sports counselor/psychologist with specific interest & experience in providing counseling to student athletes who are experiencing personal and academic concerns. In collaboration with the Division of Athletics, the sports counselor/ psychologist will ensure that mental health issues of student-athletes are being addressed in a timely manner, stay apprised of national trends, and will use this data to inform interventions and to educate student athletes, coaches, and staff.
Responsibilities will include:
- performing individual, group and couples counseling
- providing consultations with faculty and staff on student issues
- facilitating presentations on mental health topics for a diverse student population
- providing on-call and crisis intervention.
- may provide supervision of graduate students in psychology, social work, and mental health counseling.

Minimum Qualifications
- Candidate must currently have or will attain a New York State psychology license or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) status , or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) status within 18 months of the date of hire.
- Experience required: Two years of clinical experience working with young adults (18-25 years) or adults (25+ years).
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of University Counseling Center experience.
- Received supervision hours towards certification by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
- Experience working with high performance athletes, preferably in the collegiate setting.
- Experience in working with an ethnically and culturally diverse client population and a strong understanding of Athletics culture.
- Significant experience working with individuals with persistent mental illness.
