Cumming School of Veterinary Medicine is located on a 585-acre campus in North Grafton, MA. It includes teaching hospitals for large and small animals and wildlife, excellent facilities to conduct state-of-the-art biomedical research and to train veterinary and graduate students, and a 250acre working farm. The school also maintains the Tufts Veterinary Field Service in Woodstock, CT and the Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment and Specialties in Walpole, MA. Cummings School has four academic departments with a total of 116 faculty members. Academic programs support 400 DVM students and approximately 50 graduate students, as well as nearly 100 advanced clinical trainees and postdoctoral scholars.
The Secretary of the Faculty (SF) provides advanced administrative support and leadership for the Dean in his academic and executive leadership responsibilities, particularly in areas related to faculty governance, the faculty handbook policies and procedures, school by-laws and programs, and initiatives related to the faculty. The scope of responsibilities includes communicating with and supporting policies and procedures of the Faculty and Cummings School, providing guidance on faculty-related issues, managing workflow and communication for standing and other relevant committees, providing guidance and administration for faculty governance structure, drafting agendas and managing preparation for relevant meetings. This includes providing essential information and support to the dean, committee chairs, department chairs and Faculty Council regarding faculty meetings, and the above areas of responsibilities. The SF will staff and support several of the school’s committees. This position is the primary liaison between the dean and the provost’s office and general council regarding governance, the handbook and by-laws. In addition, the Secretary of the Faculty supports open communication among the faculty and administration. Additional work and support for cyclical or special activities is also required (e.g. for accreditation self-study reports).
This position enhances and supports open communication between the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine faculty and the Dean’s Office. The Secretary of the Faculty will work closely with, share data resources with and cross-train with the Faculty Affairs Officer and the Dean’s Administrative Assistant.
BA, BS, equivalent degree or equivalent experience with 5 plus years’ experience in administrative support in higher education or in a similar sized organization
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), database software, Internet and Web proficiency.
Strong communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Able to work independently and as part of a team, with discretion, tact and diplomacy.
Ability to communicate effectively in a demanding environment with conflicting requests

Willingness to travel to the Tufts Medford or Boston campuses and to Woodstock CT, as required.

Specific experience in areas related to faculty governance or faculty affairs would be considered an asset.
The position requires strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, planning and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects in a complex environment; willingness and ability to work collaboratively and collegially; working knowledge of, administrative computer software and systems and database management software.
This is primarily an office-based position. However, flexibility to work as needed beyond the typical work week during occasional periods of critical deadline pressure or special events, (for example, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Accreditation Site Visit).
