The Cal Sport Club Program, a program within the Campus Recreation unit of the Department of Recreational Sports, offers the campus community a wide variety of competition and recreation in twenty-five sports and activities. The Campus Recreation unit, and specifically the Sport Clubs program, offers Cal students, staff, and faculty an alternative to Intramural sports, Physical Education, and Intercollegiate Athletics. Currently, approximately 1,400 members of the campus community participate in the Sport Clubs program. The Sport Clubs Program Intern will assist the Sport Club administration with program design and implementation, as well as day to day operations and oversight of the sport club program.

  • Designs, plans, organizes and conducts complex recreational activities, trainings, workshops, special events, and/or programs for Sport Club constituents and participants.
  • These offerings, both short term and intermittent, focus on a variety of professional, social, cultural, recreational, and physical activities and serve to enhance adult learning and trainings on club, department, and university policy and procedure.
  • Assists with day to day operations of 33 sport clubs, which includes managing special events, revision of policies and procedures, individual club budget planning and reconciling, reviewing and recommending risk management policies based on best practices and industry trends, marketing sport club events and accomplishments.
  • Maintains a supportive customer service orientated and inclusive environment for program participants, club officers, and coaches.
  • Interacts with said individuals in a professional and positive manner.
  • Keeps current on methods of instruction, techniques and skills, facilitation and training, industry best practices and leadership development through continuing education.
  • Participates in required professional development activities. Assign and monitor work tasks as necessary and according to weekly/monthly deadlines.
  • Oversees inventory, storage, and maintenance of program equipment.
  • Maintains files, records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Assists with the revision and enforcement of program policies and procedures.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
  • Develops, coordinates and conducts staff in service training and safety audits.
  • Monitors safety, security and risk management issues.
  • Assists with appropriate public relations, marketing, event management and programs promotion.
  • Assist with the development and oversight of program budgets.

Required Qualifications

  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking and able to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language and be able to effectively communicate with customers, coworkers, supervisors and other department staff.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer applications including the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus policies and procedures.
  • Able to tolerate change and ambiguity; able to adapt to new information and/or procedures.
  • Has thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn program activity, industry best practices and able to identify potential hazards amidst crowd behavior and ensure public safety.
  • Position requires strong leadership and inter-personal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
  • Strong service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Able to handle a fluctuating volume and intensity of business, including crowds and occasionally difficult customers; calm; patient.
  • Must have experience supervising and developing inexperienced student club officers.


  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Licenses or certifications:

  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.

Other Information

This is a 12 month, 75% part-time, 30-hours per week, Contract (temporary) appointment.
