Research Technician – Molecular Biology & Microbiology, School of Medicine – (21001454)
This is a grant funded position and is not eligible for severance pay.
Members of the department are actively engaged in research on fundamental and medically related problems in microbiology and molecular genetics. They include the genetics and biochemistry of bacterial and fungal pathogens and their interaction with host cells, the mode of action of antibiotics and drug resistance, the intracellular organization of bacteria, mechanisms of transcriptional regulation, mechanisms of virus entry, gene expression, replication and assembly.
Under supervision of the principal investigator and a senior scientist who is intimately familiar with the techniques required, the Research Technician will conduct a variety of experiments following established procedures/protocols, which will include culturing bacteria and mammalian cells, performing electrophoresis or PCR, extracting DNA, preparing samples for high throughput Illumina DNA sequencing, developing microdroplet cell culture technologies, and other well established laboratory techniques. In these capacities, the Technician will also record test results and analyze data using basic statistics. In addition, the Technician may monitor the functioning of laboratory equipment, organize and maintain logbooks and supplies, and assist in monitoring animal colonies. Candidates who have an interest in learning animal handling and/o
experience in animal infection models will have an opportunity to participate in ongoing animal infection models.
Bachelor’s degree in science with up to 1 year laboratory experience preferred.
Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and procedures
Excellent organizational and communication skills are critical.
Knowledge of MS Office products, basic statistical analysis and computation is necessary.
Previous experience working with small research animals, microbiology and/or molecular biology techniques preferred.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Occasional need to work overtime, holidays or weekends as needed.
