Hazardous Materials Specialist

Position Summary:

Reporting to the director of Environmental Health and Safety. Manage the University's hazardous waste management, PCB management, used oil management and hazard communication programs. Provide technical expertise in the handling, use, storage and characteristics of hazardous materials. Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials. This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or University closure.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Education: Bachelors degree in related field or combination of education and experience totaling at least 6 years with a minimum of 10 hours in chemistry.

- Experience: Minimum four years direct experience in hazardous waste operations, in addition to educational requirement.

- Must have completed an EPA/OSHA 40-hour hazardous waste operations/emergency response training course and have a minimum of two years supervisory experience in a hazardous waste management program.

- Good knowledge of: principles and analytical techniques used in chemistry; principles of chemical hazards; state and federal laws and regulations relating to hazardous waste management, transportation of hazardous materials, PCB management and used oil management; procedures for collecting, preparing for transport and disposal of hazardous materials.

- Knowledge of: monitoring and measurement instrumentation use; use of personal protective and respiratory protection equipment; use of spill response materials and equipment; waste minimization techniques; computer database systems.

- Demonstrated ability to: assess hazards, interpret technical data; interpret and apply complex written material such as technical manuals, regulations, and reference materials; present information clearly and succinctly verbally, in writing, and in presentations; manage multiple projects and appropriately prioritize a heavy workload and client needs; self-motivate with a proactive, high-energy, enthusiastic can do work ethic; incorporate strategic planning initiatives from the EHS strategic plan into the routine work plan; use personal computers.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Masters degree in chemistry (preferred) or other scientific discipline with a minimum of 40 hours in chemistry. Hazardous waste operational experience in an institution of higher education.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

- Waste handling and emergency response duties require the wearing of protective and respiratory protection equipment and require lifting or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 500 pounds, using material handling equipment as necessary.

- Willing and able to respond to emergencies at any hour; work with hazardous materials; participate in medical surveillance program; participate in specific training programs for the purpose of securing and maintaining pertinent certifications; engage in minimal travel for the purpose of attending training classes and performing work-related tasks at different university facilities.

- Physical ability to: wear and maintain appropriate personal protective and respiratory protection equipment; work in adverse environmental conditions and lift or otherwise move objects weighing 50 pounds or more; must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and live within 15 miles of the University of Idaho or be willing to relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months of initial hire.
