Position Summary
UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is ranked among the top engineering programs nationally, supporting over 250 faculty, 110 staff, and 7,500 graduate and undergraduate students. The Business Officer reports to the Dean in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and serves as the Dean’s strategic partner, providing leadership and oversight of a $50+ million budget across multiple revenue sources. The Business Officer executes a vision and strategy that aligns with the Dean’s and University’s goals and drives decision making and problem resolution within SEAS. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Strategic business partner for budget and financial management. In this role, the Business Officer serves as the budget administrator for SEAS’ $50+ million budget and is responsible for advancing financial and operational strategies, modeling financial scenarios in an enrollment- and union-driven environment, and reporting, interpreting, and disseminating accurate financial results.
  • Financial steward, establishing and monitoring compliance with operational and capital budgets, serving as the primary risk manager and financial advisor for SEAS and overseeing the implementation and effectiveness of financial, information, and other control systems. Further, the Business Officer ensures compliance with contractual financial obligations, integrating and implementing financial strategies into organizational initiatives, and forecasting future revenue and expenditures to minimize financial risks. The Business Officer must effectively communicate SEAS’ budget condition, commitments, and projections to multiple audiences (department chairs, faculty, University administration, advisory councils, etc.) and ensure that the Dean has current, accurate financial information immediately accessible.
  • Key member of the Dean’s Senior Management team. In this role, the Business Officer is a key point of contact representing the Dean’s initiatives to both the university centralized services and departments within SEAS. Using expertise in organizational engagement, the Business Officer collaborates and builds consensus with departments on SEAS’s direction and approach, participates in strategic thinking and long term planning initiatives, and interacts with the University’s centralized services to ensure alignment with SEAS goals.
  • Lead data officer for SEAS, creating dynamic reports and digital presentations for a broad range of audiences. In addition, the Business Officer reports accurate data on the School and its programs to leading academic ranking organizations (such as AAU, ASEE, ABET, US News & World Report, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications
We seek candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of faculty, staff and students, supporting proactive initiatives to increase the size and reputation of SEAS.

Candidates must have a master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and three years progressively responsible experience managing and administering complex financial systems.

Expert knowledge in leading change, financial data modeling, managing multiple revenue sources, mentoring and developing staff, designing business systems and processes, and engaging employees and customers in these activities is required.
