Departmental Overview

The Colleges of Chemistry (CoC) and Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley are recognized for their educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top one to three Science and Engineering programs in the US. The combined Colleges have close to 300 regular faculty members, 2000 graduate students and 3500 undergraduate students located in nine academic departments. The CoC and CoE lie at the intersection of a number of distinct science and engineering disciplines, multiple major multi-campus institutes, and several campus-wide strategic initiatives. In all cases, the two Colleges prepare scientists and engineers with the multidisciplinary skills to lead enterprises of all scales, in industry, government and the nonprofit sector.

The professional Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) graduate program within the College of Chemistry and in collaboration with the College of Engineering, prepares post-baccalaureate students for career paths that lead to software positions and managerial and executive positions in software technology enabled companies and organizations as well as entrepreneurial ventures. The program combines leadership coursework in innovation, teamwork and management with intensive study in an area of technical specialization of software engineering tied to large scale scientific computing, data science, and advanced algorithms.

The Student Services Advisor performs a range of high-level functions in all areas pertaining to student advising, admissions and program administration. The position works with various partners for the successful delivery of the MSSE degree, including other campus units, Fung Institute, and NSF Molecular Software Simulation Institute.

Academic Advising:

  • Advises faculty on departmental / school / college and university policies and procedures.
  • Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree / program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.
  • Devises curriculum planning in collaboration with the Executive Director and faculty, and with other departments.
  • Based on knowledge of the curriculum, coordinates the assignment of students to faculty advisers.
  • Prepares training materials for faculty advisers and annually edits MSSE student handbook.
  • Serves as "home base" for MSSE students, welcoming them into the program and directing them to campus resources as appropriate.
  • Handles exceptional requests and petitions.
  • Identifies and refers students with specialized needs to the faculty Program Director and faculty advisor(s) as needed.
  • Advises and counsels individuals with unique and/or confidential problems, and arranges specialized help for students as needed through other support services within the community.
  • Makes recommendations for and effects resolution of complex student issues regarding financial commitments, personal crises, student progress and grievances.

Recruitment and Admissions:

  • Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions.
  • Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation.
  • Coordinates appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals.
  • Utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps screen applicants for admissions.
  • Evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility.
  • Initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.
  • Monitors and reports trends in admissions, yield, and distribution of students to facilitate recruitment and admission strategies, including special efforts to attract qualified women and underrepresented minorities.

Financial Aid:

  • Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards.
  • Advises students on financial aid options of the organization and extra-mural fellowship opportunities.
  • Oversees processes for equitable assignment of Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and coordinates GSI assignments each term.

Policy and Procedure Interpretation:

  • Interprets organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
  • Provides advice and assistance to students and scholars regarding complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization.

Events and Career Counseling:

  • Oversees and may conduct orientation of new students.
  • Plans and implements high-visibility student events, such as commencements.
  • Organizes job fairs.
  • Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • Develops and enhances an alumni recruitment network.
  • Advises students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to MSSE.
  • Identifies and cultivates potential employers and industry partners for capstone projects that may lead to subsequent employment.
  • Coordinates and implements programs and workshops to support and retain URM students / scholars.

Program Administration:

  • Facilitates operational needs as they arise, including overseeing student assistants, executing expense reimbursements, assisting with annual program reviews and rate proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency with PC platform and desktop applications for word processing and data management (e.g. MS Office, FileMaker) and ability to learn other database applications as needed.


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility / authorization for international students and scholars.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to learn campus policies and procedures pertaining to graduate education, curriculum, grading, student conduct, confidentiality (FERPA) and related areas.
  • Experience advising international students and coordinating outreach efforts to international markets.
  • Prior admissions experience in particular designing and leading recruitment efforts.


  • Master's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $65,000.00 - $95,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • Remote work is an option depending on candidate and department needs.
