UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) at the Tang Center provides comprehensive medical, mental health, insurance and health promotion services to all Berkeley students, and a variety of health programs for faculty and staff. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Grounded in a biopsychosocial approach to behavioral medicine, Psychiatrists provide students with comprehensive psychiatric assessment, evidence-based medical treatments, and ongoing management of a wide- variety of acute and chronic mental health conditions. In addition to providing direct clinical care to students, we collaborate closely with the clinicians at UHS and in the local community to provide psychiatric consultation, coordination of care, and continuity of care referrals when appropriate.
I. Direct Patient Care - Performs procedures associated with area of specialization ( psychiatry).
The Psychiatrist provides direct patient service including new patient evaluation (emergent, urgent and routine), follow up care and case management as required, consultation, etc. This includes the following:
- Initial intake evaluation for patients referred to psychiatry. This includes an appropriate history, current medications, allergies, pertinent medical and psychiatric history and an appropriate mental status and physical examination.
- Formulation of an appropriate initial mental health diagnosis, disposition and treatment plan. This includes: ordering and interpreting diagnostic test(s) as appropriate, recommending therapeutic treatment modalities (including medications), providing appropriate patient instruction and or referrals. Prior medical and/or mental health records from outside providers will be requested as appropriate.
- Collaboration with all members of the medical and mental health care team
- Monitor changes in clients mental illness, status, condition, or medication side effects
- Consult with colleagues when appropriate.
Clinical Consultation Sees psychiatry patients requiring a higher degree of subject matter expertise or primarily sees patients in a consultative basis in area of specialty.
- The incumbent provides high quality psychiatry consultation regarding patient assessment and management for staff members in Clinical Services (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants); Counseling and Psychological Services (including post docs, interns and other trainees); Social Services, and other UHS staff, as needed.
- This may include identification and implementation of case management strategies, situation assessment and management (e.g. aberrant behavior), etc. Facilitation of care and appropriate disposition is emphasized.
II. Management of Challenging Cases
The incumbent provides consultation and assistance to assure appropriate management of complex cases. This may include assuming overall management of challenging clinical cases, complex family relationships or academic issues, aberrant behavior or suicide prevention and response.
Review Requests for Medical Records
From time to time, the Psychiatrist provides clinical analysis and input as needed to review outside requests for UHS psychiatry records.
IV. Maintain professional standards of documentation.
- Presenting problem, history, examination, clinical recommendations and other patient contacts will be documented in the psychiatric record.
- Written chart notes are succinct, legible, accurate and completed in a timely fashion.
- Informed consent is obtained and documented where applicable.
- Medication allergies and side effects are documented appropriately.
- Initial intake, closing summaries, referral forms, and other required documentation are completed appropriately.
V. Organizational Responsibilities

- Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with clients and staff regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background, sexual or gender orientation.
- Refer administrative inquires, client complaints/concerns to appropriate supervisors.
- Maintain knowledge of client rights and responsibilities, and established rules of confidentiality and patient privacy.
- Maintain psychiatric and medical record confidentiality.
- Maintains an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental context of health, including mental health on the college campus.
VI. Work collaboratively with UHS staff following a team approach.
- Serve on committees as assigned.
- Participate constructively in staff meetings.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Significant clinical experience in Psychiatry
- Expert clinical skills.
- Must be able to communicate with both patients and clinical staff members.
- Must have effective diagnostic and decision making skills in area of specialty/expertise.
- Must be able to work in a collaborative manner.
- Must be able to diagnose patient condition and make associated treatment recommendations.
- Must be able to influence others.
- Requires knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.
- Must be computer literate.
- Board Eligible or current board certification in psychiatry.
- Active and valid California Medical License
- Successful completion of Psychiatry Residency at an ACGME accredited program
- Current board certification in Psychiatry
- Strong professional references
