Departmental Overview

The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) is part of the College of Letters and Science. Its focus on biological integration and diversity encompasses the full spectrum of biological organization (e.g., from molecular to biosphere) for organisms ranging from viruses to plants and animals. The faculty represent a wide range of expertise, including paleontology, population genetics, physiology, anatomy, human biology and health sciences, and organismal, ecological, and evolutionary botany and zoology. The Instructional Support unit provides extensive services to approximately 23 lab courses and assistance to several of the ~110 courses taught each year, reaching over 8000 students.


  • Maintain cultures of two species of choanoflagellates.
  • General Laboratory Administrative Support (provide administrative support, including library searches, ordering supplies, filling out standard UC forms: reimbursement forms, chemical inventory, safety checklists, lab roster).
  • Computer Support (set up and perform all basic maintenance on lab computers; perform basic software/hardware upgrades, disk space management, and backups on a regular basis; resolve simple software/hardware problems, update and maintain web pages using basic HTML).

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with a broad range of Mac and Windows software (e.g. Word, Excel, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat, Quicklime) and lab website updating (using HTML).
  • Experience with library search tools.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Coursework in biology or experience in a biology laboratory setting and/or equivalent experience or training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sterile technique and culturing microorganisms.
  • Experience with light microscopy.
  • Ability to work with lab personnel, including undergrads and postdocs.
  • Familiarity with R, Python, Image J.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 1-year non-exempt temporary position at 25% (10 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly and not eligible for UC Benefits. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience.
