The Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC)
ensures the health and wellbeing of animals used for research and teaching through the provision of veterinary care and oversight, animal husbandry (if not done by the PI), research support services, and training. In addition, OLAC is in charge of animal purchases and acquisition, husbandry and veterinary care, animal shipping, pharmacy and animal supply purchases, and accessing animal facilities.
Although the day-to-day assignment of space rests with OLAC, overall space needs and allocations fall under the purview of the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) with input from a faculty advisory committee, the Committee on Animal Research Space Assignment (CARSA).
ANIMAL CARE DUTIES:
- Perform routine animal husbandry tasks including cleaning, watering, feeding, and grooming of laboratory animals pre recommended guidelines and regulations.
- Clean and repair cages/enclosures and related ancillary equipment following departmental procedures.
- Observe animal daily.
- Report health concerns or abnormalities to the Veterinary staff promptly.
- Complete all required documentation completely and contemporaneously.
- Maintain documentation, reports, and logs including: animal identification cards and inventory records, room environment reports, environmental enrichment logs, and cage washing and/or autoclaving logs.
- Restrain animals using the proper technique for each species for technical procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor including para-veterinary duties and perform duties of area lead technician in their absence when assigned.
- Assist in withdrawal of necessary food and supplies for the area and feed commercially prepared special diets to animals as instructed.
- Assist in receiving, identifying, tagging and labeling of new animals.
- Assist in providing special care for sick or experimentally infected animals as required.
- Assist the area supervisor with all record keeping of each animal received including required federal forms, health charts, I.D. numbers, and release forms.
- Perform euthanasia on rodents under the direction of the Veterinarian Staff.
CLEANING & SANITIZATION:
- Operate a cage washer for cleaning and sanitizing animal cages and cage supplies through automatic and manual processes.
- Operate sterilizer machine in order to sterilize caging equipment for the animals.
- Dispose of animal refuse and soiled bedding properly.
- Clean and maintain animal care areas by scrubbing down the ceilings, walls, and floors at prescribed intervals following departmental procedures.
- Promptly inform the work leader/supervisor of the need for additional equipment, protective clothing, occupational health information, or training for personnel assigned to the facility.
- Maintain an organized and clean work environment including but not limited to: animal rooms, common areas such as corridors, cage wash rooms, procedure rooms, anterooms, storage areas and grounds.
- Communicate facility and equipment renovation and/or repair needs to the work leader/supervisor.
TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Attend and participate in on-the-job and classroom training sessions.
- Complete all assigned computer based safety and professional development training by predetermined due dates.
- Communicate procedural questions and self-identified training deficiencies to supervisor and training staff.
- Provide procedural mentoring to other staff as instructed by supervisor.
- Working knowledge of hygienic principles and basic animal husbandry.
- Working knowledge of animal husbandry procedures sufficient to care for laboratory animals in an experimental environment attested by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the ALAT level or higher.
- Working knowledge of habits and appearances of laboratory animals sufficient to notice deviations from normal.
- Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing materials and techniques sufficient to maintain a healthful environment.
- Skill in handling a variety of animals in a variety of situations sufficient to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
- Skill in reading English and numbers to be able to follow instructions, maintain records and identify specific animals.
- Basic computer skills to enter animal health reports in departmental data base.
- Knowledge and understanding of the following guidelines and regulations: The Guide, PHS Policy, and AWA.
- Applies knowledge of individual facility SOPs to ensure that they are being properly implemented.
- Ability to work in an animal research environment which requires continuous contact with animals.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pound bags of feed, bedding or animals.
- Ability to push up to 300-pound cage racks.
- Ability to euthanize rodents via CO2.
- Knowledge of appropriate labeling and disposal of carcasses.
- Ability to communicate professionally using proper terminology with individuals at varied levels throughout the University.
- Graduation from high school, completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS, and one year of animal care experience; or high school graduation and two years of animal care experience in the care of an animal species appropriate to the particular job; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge's and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Licenses or certifications required, if any:
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from AALAS (or reasonably expects to obtain the certification within 12 months of employment).
- Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
