Departmental Overview

CED is comprised of faculty, students and staff with an impressive set of backgrounds and talents. We believe in the importance of supporting an inclusive environment that values community and builds its strength from a diversity of views and expertise. The College of Environmental Design (CED) is a multifaceted academic unit, with three departments (Architecture, City & Regional Planning, and Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning).

Blake Garden is a 10.6 acre garden open to the public on weekdays and located four miles north of the Berkeley campus in Kensington, California. Its mission is to expand and sustain a well-designed outdoor environment that supports teaching and research in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning.

Blake Garden encourages the development of understanding and appreciation of nature in the garden environment. The garden contains a large diversity of plant materials that grow in our Mediterranean type climate and contains new and historic garden design and structures designed and built by UC Professors from the College of Environmental Design, students and the garden's staff. Responsibilities

The Blake Garden Horticulturist is accountable to Administrative Manager of the Department of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning, with a dotted-line reporting to the Blake Garden Manager.

The Garden Horticulturist's principal responsibility is the Horticultural maintenance of the Garden. This includes, but is not limited to watering, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, amending the soil, weeding, pruning, planting, and other activities involved in cultivating plants. The incumbent may also perform construction or reconstruction projects in his/her area. The incumbent provides support to the faculty, staff and student research related to the Garden. This may take the form of volunteer training and giving educational tours of the Garden and other outreach activities.

In addition, the incumbent participates in the curation of the Blake Garden collection and the maintenance of plant records and conservation of the collection. The incumbent maintains proper inventory needs and purchases required plant materials, tools and other supplies.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in arboreta, horticulture and garden design. A working knowledge of basic landscape maintenance, including various irrigation systems operations, troubleshooting and repair. Ability to work independently, set and meet objectives, and coordinate objectives with other members of the staff. Familiarity with the establishment/maintenance of natural community based gardens. Demonstrable knowledge of California flora and ability to provide plant and pest identification Ability to maintain accurate records and to research collection acquisitions and their horticultural requirements. Intermediate computer applications skills relevant to landscape architecture and programs related to maintaining collections inventory. Solid decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis. Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff, volunteers and the public. Solid verbal and written communication skills in the English language, including active listening, flexibility, and critical thinking, and ability to multi-task and ensure effective time management. Ability to perform hard physical labor lifting up to 100 lbs on occasion.


Preferred Qualifications
  • interest and/or experience in sustainable design, green technologies and community outreach and educational programs. education in and/or equivalent experience in achieving and managing environmentally sensitive solutions in a creative and effective way. Master of Landscape Architecture and/or design background preferred.

Salary designated for this position is $51,510-56,856; however, salary commensurate with experience.
