Departmental Overview

The Graduate School of Education is a complex academic unit whose mission is to provide leadership in advancing the theoretical base of education, analyze the complex social environments of education, and promote the improvement of educational practice. The School is home to approximately 500 employees located in 2121 Berkeley Way, University Hall, and at other off-campus locations.

The Business Services Office (BSO) Manager reports to the Finance Director and is a member of the Finance Leadership team. The BSO Manager manages a team of four analysts responsible for financial transactions, vendor setup and payments, student award allocations, and student employment action and support for resource allocations across the school.

The BSO Manager will work in consultation with the Finance Leadership team, faculty and staff to manage the day to day financial operations of the school adhering to system and university-wide policies and procedures and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. The BSO Manager will also need to cultivate relationships with Finance personnel across campus to effectively execute their work.

  • Leads a team of financial services mid-level professional and/or clerical staff.
  • Trains staff and creates an effective teamwork environment.
  • Applies advanced financial services and accounting concepts to perform highly complex technical analyses, often dealing directly with program managers.
  • Applies advanced understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures to resolve highly complex or difficult assignments.
  • Interprets related policies and advises departments accordingly ensuring compliance with university and system policies.
  • Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect functional area.
  • Develops and implements financial transaction processes and procedures and trains staff on financial activities.
  • Conducts audits of internal records and processes.
  • Makes recommendations on maintaining and strengthening internal controls to protect University resources, and ensures compliance with federal and state requirements; stays current with changes in the law.
  • May back up those who perform specialized tasks or activities.
  • Works with supervisor to establish and work towards professional development goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of financial or accounting concepts, policies and procedures, as well as related accounting and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and ability to learn their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Advanced leadership skills to provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to professional and support staff.
  • Skills include service orientation, ability to multi-task effectively in a varied, high volume environment; uses sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and effective verbal and written communication skills.


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of organization and systemwide financial processes and procedures.
  • May require analytical skills sufficient to develop and implement financial data management and reporting systems.
  • May require skills in project management, leadership, and process re-design.

Salary & Benefits
