Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering (COE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States With more than 225 regular faculty members, 1,800 graduate students and 3,100 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering Is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. The multi-unit Dean's Office provides administrative, student services, development, capital projects, and facilities management services. COE occupies ten buildings on the Berkeley campus and collaborative research facilities in Blum Center, Berkeley Way West, Helios, Stanley Hall, and Sutardja Dai Hall along with other remote sites such as Mudd Hall, Shires Hall, 2150 Shattuck Ave, and the Stadium. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole are close to 230 million annually.

This position designs, installs, manages, and provides technical support for audiovisual systems within College of Engineering facilities. Engages with community members to gather requirements and provide guidance; designs AV IT systems using industry best practices; selects and procures reliable hardware and software; installs, configures, and maintains equipment to meet professional standards; provides thoughtful and timely end user audiovisual support; and manages projects and oversees vendor services to meet unit AV IT goals.

Responsibilities

30% AV IT System Design and Installation

  • Design, install, and manage complex AV IT systems in meeting rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, auditoriums, and other facilities, based on organizational needs, codes and regulations, and industry best practices. Responsibilities include gathering of requirements, design, engineering, hardware and software procurement, installation, testing, writing documentation, and user training.
  • Participate in short- and long-range planning efforts, conduct product research, and provide recommendations for emerging technologies and new approaches for the use of AV IT technology to facilitate instruction, administration, and research.
  • Create detailed proposals including AV signal flow diagrams, schematics, and infrastructure drawings for facilities and systems.
  • Evaluate hardware and software products to meet user requirements, usability and reliability standards, and ensure compatibility with campus AV and IT guidelines.
  • Provide AV IT consulting for the College of Engineering Dean's Office, COE departments, and other COE units on specialized audiovisual needs.
  • Coordinate with other College of Engineering technical staff in planning and implementing interdepartmental systems and solutions. Interact regularly with AV and IT staff from across campus, and participate in campus and college-wide AV IT management groups.


30% End User and Event Support

  • Assist users with day-to-day usage of AV equipment in the College of Engineering Dean's Office, Engineering Center, and other COE facilities, responding promptly to time-sensitive requests.
  • Provide standby support for high-priority hybrid meetings, Zoom Room calls, and presentations.
  • Provide audiovisual support for special events, including equipment setup, streaming, recording, mixing, editing, and sharing finished media.


20% Project and Vendor Management

  • Participate in stakeholder meetings to ensure end-user needs are met.
  • Make recommendations on installation plans, including the creation of documentation, drawings, and schematics needed to hire outside vendors, and lead on-site bid walks.
  • Select, negotiate with, and oversee outside contractors in the acquisition, installation, and testing of AV IT systems.
  • Ensure that AV IT installations are documented with system and rack drawings, wire lists, and other internal and end-user documentation, and verify that projects are installed to plan specifications.
  • Ensure that projects come in on time and on budget.
  • Coordinate with architects, construction engineering teams, vendors, and contractors regarding AV IT design and installation and ensure that projects meet specifications.
  • Monitor change requests, requests for information, submittals, and other key project-related documents and report any effect on the project's budget.
  • Coordinate inspections of complex projects with institutional inspectors.


20% AV IT System Maintenance

  • Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting of complex AV IT systems, including walkthrough inspections, programming, firmware updates, device testing, and cable repair.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience installing, programming, operating, and maintaining audiovisual systems such as projectors, video walls, digital signage, PTZ cameras, audio processors, microphone arrays, mixers, control systems, software, and cabling following industry standards and best practices as well as applicable codes and regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of audio, video, AV IT control systems, AV over IP, electronics theory, acoustic design, and architectural and cabling requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and create AV flow diagrams, schematics, and AV infrastructure drawings, and to write technical and user documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience managing AV projects including obtaining scope, budget, planning, design, bid preparation, installation, inspection, testing, and user training.
  • Project management skills needed to accomplish objectives while maintaining a climate of fairness, cooperation, and professionalism.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills for working with and supporting technical and non-technical personnel from diverse backgrounds.
  • Problem-solving skills, creativity, motivation to learn, attention to detail, and persistence to work through challenging technical issues.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,400.00 to $112,900.00 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is Exempt and paid monthly.
