The undergraduate advising professionals in the School of Engineering foster student growth, empowerment, and success by serving, advising, guiding, nurturing, and celebrating our students, and working with them and our faculty to solve problems so that students may successfully navigate the university and its curriculum while achieving their academic and personal goals. We focus on the academic aspect of students’ lives at Tufts, providing information, advice, and support to help them successfully complete their degrees in a timely manner while ensuring that our students have an enriching and rewarding academic experience. In our work, we are mindful of their social and emotional well-being and endeavor to support their sense of belonging, identity as an engineer, and agency in their education. We connect them to campus resources such as Tufts Global Education, Student Services, the StAAR Center, the Center for STEM Diversity, the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, Career Services, and Health Services, among others. We collaborate with faculty and other departments to advocate for students and improve the academic experience for all students. We are responsible for the engineering related components of helping new students transition to the School of Engineering at Tufts, including events during Orientation and materials provided to new students before their arrival.

What You'll Do

The Senior Academic Advisor for Student Success will advance School and University goals of undergraduate student success and retention by leading proactive academic advising initiatives and actively managing complex student cases in partnership with faculty, staff, and families. The Senior Academic Advisor is a key member of the School of Engineering Advising team which consists of the Dean of Academic Advising and Undergraduate Studies, two additional Senior Academic Advisors, two advising roles in the departments of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and the Bridge to Engineering Success at Tufts Program Manager in the Center for STEM Diversity.


The Senior Academic Advisor for Student Success works closely with the members of the Dean of Student Affairs Office, and other staff colleagues as needed to holistically support struggling students. Key partners for proactive advising initiatives include Student Services, Tufts Technology Services, the StAAR Center, the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, and faculty. With a focus on junior and senior students, this role will complement the work of the two Senior Academic Advisors who are responsible for supporting students as they matriculate, orient, and in their first two years at the University.

Basic Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Commitment to advising, mentoring, and guiding college students in STEM fields.
  • Superior collaborative and interpersonal skills, including flexibility and approachability.
  • Experience with supporting students facing a wide range of complex and sensitive issues.
  • Experience interacting directly with parents/guardians and faculty.
  • Experience with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and justice.
  • Dedication to serving and supporting a diverse student population, including students of diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students across the gender spectrum.
  • Able to work independently, think on one’s feet, set priorities, and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent skills in written and oral communication; able to write, edit, and proofread educational documents and other publications.
  • Proficient with SIS, Portfolio, Canvas, Qualtrics, Box and other applications for writing documents, making spreadsheets, creating databases, producing brochures and slideshows, and communicating through web-based audio-video services.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred; preferred educational background in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, or a STEM field.
  • Five (5) or more years of related experience as an instructor, advisor, tutor, mentor, or administrator in a college or university setting.
  • Additional experience working in other areas of university student services, such as student affairs, campus life programs, college learning center, multicultural affairs, bridge programs, and retention programs.
