Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking a temporary Grounds Service Person to perform maintenance and repairs on the landscaped grounds, parking lots, roads, fencing, and drainage systems as assigned by the Foreman or Crew Leader at the Daytona Beach, FL campus. This is a full time, temporary non-benefited position that could last for up to 6 months and could potentially transition to full time position.
Install new and renovate old landscaping including but not limited to turf, trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.
Maintain, renovate, and repair all exterior athletic and recreational facilities. Remove all trash on grounds including emptying waste receptacles. Provide emergency response, as appropriate, to exterior hazardous conditions.
Assist in various special events, set-ups, and building service functions as needed.
Maintain, renovate and repair campus grounds including but not limited to: landscaping, fencing, parking lots, roadways, pathways, athletic and recreational facilities. Maintain parking lots and roadways including potholes, curb stops, and cleaning. Operate power equipment using caution to ensure the safety of both life an property. Inspect equipment daily to ensure it is operating properly.
Maintain records of man-hours and materials used, and vehicle log trip tickets. Responsible for keeping all equipment safe from vandalism or theft during working hours. Responsible for requesting equipment and supplies in advance to ensure job completion. Responsible for cleaning all equipment at the end of the work day.
Work hours may vary.
High school diploma or GED with 2-3 years of professional or commercial landscape maintenance experience.
Prior grounds and/or landscaping experience
Required licenses, certificates, and /or security clearances:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. In some instances, a valid Class C (CDL) license may be required.
Must meet the University’s standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):
More than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years
More than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year
A major conviction in the last 3 years, including (but not limited to) driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and/or homicide or assault by motor vehicle.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing, with the ability to comprehend basic instructions and respond effectively.
Must be able to operate a standard shift vehicle.
Ability to operate all power equipment as related to grounds maintenance.
Basic knowledge in all areas of grounds maintenance, horticulture, cement work, etc.
Ability to climb ladders or scaffolding and work in overhead areas.
Must be able to lift and/or carry miscellaneous grounds equipment or supplies short distances and to push or pull a hand cart. Eye-hand coordination essential for proper operation of power tools and other work associated with grounds maintenance.
Employee must take necessary precautions due to the nature of the equipment he/she is working with and the outside elements subjected to, to protect themselves and those around them of the hazards associated with this type of work.
