Departmental Overview

The Center for Jewish Studies is a diverse and interdisciplinary campus unit administered through the Arts & Humanities Division in the College of Letters & Science. Both the graduate and undergraduate academic programs emphasize this interdisciplinary agenda. PhD students can apply to the faculty committee to pursue a Designated Emphasis in Jewish Studies' in addition to their primary doctoral subject. Undergraduates in any department can choose a Minor in Jewish Studies' in addition to their major field of study. The Center also sponsors an annual series of Endowed Lectures, and hosts visiting faculty who augment both course offerings and public lectures. Close collaboration with several affiliated institutions serves to enhance programming through co-sponsorship and outreach to a broad audience around the Bay Area.

The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life was established in 2010 following the transfer of the Judah L. Magnes Museum to the University of California, Berkeley. Its remarkably diverse archive, museum and museum holdings include art, objects, texts, music, and historical documents about the Jews in the Global Diaspora and the American West. As one of the world's preeminent Jewish collections in a university setting, it provides highly innovative and accessible resources to both researchers and the general public. This position is responsible for assisting museum visitors with directional/informational questions, checking IDs, patrolling the complex, monitoring the perimeter control system, enforcing the Magnes and campus policies and California state laws applicable to museums and providing assistance during emergencies.

The Museum is open Tuesday - Friday, 11:00 AM - 4 PM, and will tentatively be open until 8pm on either Tuesday or Thursday Night. Occasionally there will be special evening security events.

  • While the Museum is open, patrols the Magnes Museum; interior and perimeters, and carry the necessary equipment for patrolling.
  • Account for all security equipment at the beginning and end of the shift.
  • Be familiar with the general lay out of the buildings within the complex.
  • Know the locations of alarmed facilities, alarmed doors and alarm panels, light switches and fire extinguishers and their operating procedures.
  • Turn on lights and secure building entry/exit doors at the beginning of the Museum hours and ensures that the buildings are cleared and locked up at closing time.
  • Record building checks conducted on the Building Check Log.
  • Be alert for any safety and security hazards, building maintenance problem and report findings to Building Property Manager or to Campus Facilities Services as necessary.
  • Maintain operational control and supervision of all the student security monitors, rovers working during the shift.
  • Assign postings, rotate post and break period.
  • Conduct post checks and keep security monitors abreast of current information, policy changes, etc.
  • Traoms new hired student personnel.
  • Promote appropriate behavior, responsibility and accountability among staff members.
  • Enforce the Museum Policy on Conduct, Rules of Conduct in Campus Buildings, and California laws applicable to Musuems and other policies related to security.
  • Respond to incident/complaint reports or to any emergency situation, notify UCPD and superiors, take appropriate action, conduct investigation and complete the required security report forms.
  • Report illegal, suspicious, criminal activity to UCPD, notify supervisor and complete security report.
  • Review security reports from previous shift and pass-on for information that may be useful to his shift.
  • Provide assistance to faculty, staff, patrons and the public in general.
  • Serves at the conduit for building related matters.
  • Position is responsible for contacting property management and submitting service tickets for all building related issues.
  • This position will routinely insure that all lights are functioning, checks for leaks, and addresses all matters related to the doors.
  • Maintain a chronological record of security-related activities, incident/complaint reports and messages and the action taken.
  • Complete and submit required security reports in a professional and timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by superiors.
  • Update all signs in vestibule and inside the building current regarding events.
  • Update website with open/closing dates and times.

Required Qualifications
  • General knowledge of Museum's goals, mission and organization.
  • Knowledge of Museum and campus policies on conduct, building codes, and California laws applicable to Museums.
  • Knowledge of Museum and campus emergency procedures. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Applies specialized knowledge of Museum goals, mission and organization to assist Museum visitors.
  • Applies specialized knowledge of Museum and campus policies on conduct to ensure a safe environment for Museum employees, users and visitors, as well as protect the collections in the building.
  • Computer knowledge and skill in monitoring and operating security systems and surveillance systems.
  • Basic public service skills to assist museum users and visitors, and to make effective referrals to other public services and offices.
  • Basic computer skills to work competently using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) and email programs (i.e. bMail, Outlook) .
  • Basic writing and organizing skills to competently write and update reports, procedures and other documents.
  • Basic emergency training to be able to follow guideline to evacuate the building safely.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing; to work tactfully and cooperatively with a diverse staff and campus community;
  • Ability to monitor entrances and exits.
  • Aptitude for detailed, accurate work and systematic record keeping;
  • Ability to follow directions, seeking more information when needed, check own work, and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to respond positively to interruptions and shift in priorities;
  • Ability to speak with authority when interpreting museum policies and procedures;
  • Ability to remain calm during emergencies or difficult situations;
  • Ability to maintain an excellent attendance record.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Security Guard License; Certification in First Aid & CPR; and experience working security in an academic setting.

Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.

This is a full-time, 40-hours per week, career position.
