Departmental Overview

The Bioindustrial Manufacturing And Design Ecosystem, or BioMADE, joins eight Department of Defense (DoD)-sponsored Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MII) as part of the Manufacturing USA network. BioMADE will support the growth and sustainment of domestic bioindustrial manufacturing, perform research and development (R&D) activities, facilitate the distribution of R&D funding to member institutions, and support national defense needs.

BioMADE will be the nation's leading collaborative research institute dedicated to advancing bioindustrial manufacturing technologies. BioMADE has a satellite office in Berkeley, California and all Berkeleybased BioMADE staff members are employed by the University of California.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees a national team of program managers to ensure their portfolios of projects remain aligned to BioMADE priorities and contract deliverables.
  • Helps program managers mitigate issues that arise within their portfolios.
  • Coordinates efforts of the program management team and collaborates with the BioMADE membership manager to build BioMADE membership through conferences, meetings, and personal engagements.
  • Works with the BioMADE technology team to develop funding calls.
  • Coordinates white paper and proposal review.
  • Oversees project selection process.
  • Assigns projects to program managers best suited to project goals.
  • Assesses institute program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to content, policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Oversees a multimillion dollar portfolio of projects.
  • Ensures that these project deliverables remain align to contract timing and budget.
  • Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short- and long-term planning.
  • Facilitates the efforts of various BioMADE members, and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Assists in developing outreach and communication, participates in professional conferences, and provides public relations support.


Required Qualifications
  • Travel to program sites is necessary for this position.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% time.
  • Background and experience in bioindustrial manufacturing and/or industrial biotechnology.
  • Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Experience managing confidential information.


Education/Training:
  • PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering or field relevant to bioindustrial manufacturing and/or equivalent experience/training.


Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 or more years experience in bioindustrial product or process development.


Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
