Departmental Overview

We provide core infrastructure technology services to the campus, a common, reliable, standards-based technical environment, and cyber-infrastructure for research and education. Infrastructure services include:

Data Center Colocation - providing campus customers a secure location and network connectivity for housing mission-critical servers.
Endpoint Operations and Services (EOS) - manages and maintains the Berkeley Desktop which provides a reliable, secure, and integrated computing environment that reduces the amount of time faculty and staff spend maintaining their UC Berkeley-owned computers.
Enterprise Storage and Backup solutions - offering two data storage options depending on what type of access is needed: Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS).
IT Business Continuity - consultation and planning to deliver IT resiliency, business continuity solutions and services for campus applications administered by IST, both locally and at UC Berkeley's fail-over site, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).
Production Control Shared Services Center(link is external) - a UC multi-campus organization, the PCSSC is responsible for delivering workload automation, batch scheduling and file transfer services in IBM mainframe and distributed (Unix, Windows, Linux) platform environments.

Our Telecommunications team designs, installs, and operates the campus voice and data network systems including wired data ports, Wi-Fi, desk phones, and cellular service. The group determines standards and best practices for telephony and network infrastructure development, promotes compatible standards, and best practices across campus IT infrastructure groups. Telecom services include:

Design and Project Management - consultation on IST Standards and project management for new building infrastructure projects.
Network Operations and Services - network connectivity, Wi-Fi, hostmaster services, remote VPN, and other services in support of departmental networking needs.
Voice Operations, Products and Services - providing analog and digital voice services, voicemail, cellular (wireless) services, and related products


Involves the management, long-range planning, organization, coordination, oversight and/or performance of multiple operational activities and services for the Campus Data Center, including space planning, general maintenance, call center triage and tracking of repair services, move planning and coordination, development of procedures, policies and communications related to infrastructure and safety.
  • Coordinates, monitors and tracks all Data Center support equipment maintenance, and other service requests by Physical Plant Campus Services as well as other outside vendors or organizations for assigned facilities, including tracking completion of maintenance work and the ongoing status of individual service requests.
  • Acts as liaison between Physical Plant Campus Services (PPCS) and assigned department(s), including requests for facility services between PPCS and departments or unit in assigned area(s).
  • Installs and tests fiber optic, CAT 5E copper, and power cabling per prescribed Data Center standards.
  • Works with onsite contractors and other vendors to coordinate work schedules, facilitate emergency access, and track progress of work.
  • Acts as department representative for Data Center special projects related to department facilities.
  • Assists in the installation and de-installation of Data Center customer computer equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate physical security controls for the Data Center facility.
  • May act as Building Coordinator for campus emergency/ disaster preparedness for assigned venues, serves as the communication liaison between campus service agencies and building occupants, and prepares building response plans and coordinates education and planning in this area for all building occupants.
  • Conducts regular periodic rounds to inspect areas for security, fire and accident hazards and takes appropriate action as required, including reporting infractions of fire and building codes, building rules and other building irregularities to management.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures of safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Working knowledge of Electrical and HVAC principles.
  • Working knowledge of Data Center cabling standards.
  • Skills to work under pressure of deadlines in a stressful environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of employees.
  • Embraces unique viewpoints and outlooks.
  • Welcomes differing skills, outlooks and experiences of others working toward shared goals.
