Overview

Tufts Comparative Medicine Services (Tufts CMS) in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center in Boston and Tufts University in Medford. Tufts CMS is also obligated to ensure that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The management and operation of the animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program. All centralized facilities are located within a 2-block radius, either in Boston or Medford and house in excess of 40,000 animals daily.

Preclinical Services (PS) provides an array of in vivo services to support preclinical and biomedical research to the University, TMC, industry, and academic research laboratories. Preclinical Services provides the facilities and technical assistance needed for research procedures including performing surgery, administration of parenteral or oral agents, blood collection, other in vivo procedures, euthanasia of animals, and collection of tissues. Preclinical Services serves as a resource regarding animal models, analgesics, anesthetics, drugs, and matters of animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition and in vivo research techniques.


What You'll Do

The Preclinical Services Senior Manager oversees the management of one of the sections within Preclinical Services. Working with and under general supervision of the veterinarian in charge, and under the overall supervision of the Senior Director of Tufts CMS, this position will coordinate the scheduling of the research projects; induce and monitor general anesthesia in laboratory animals; perform surgical procedures; provide technical assistance for in vivo research procedures; provide post-procedural veterinary support; assist investigative staff and/or be the primary study director for experimental procedures, anesthesia, pre-, intra- and postprocedural care and monitoring; and provide nursing services to animals. Additional responsibilities will include protocol assistance, client interaction and consultation, development of study budgets, as well as providing mentorship/collaboration/training to/with internal and external investigators, research staff, and other research technologists and technicians. Actively participates in interdepartmental training and continuing education seminars.
 
Responsibilities include
 
Technical Services
  • Directs studies independently and/or coordinates investigator use of the CMS facility
  • Compiles data of charges for supplies and use of services for cost recovery
  • Coordinates detailed facility use and staffing for studies
  • Performs independently or assist veterinarians and investigators on in vivo technical procedures, as stated above
  • Monitors anesthesia and maintain anesthesia and equipment
  • Maintains CMS equipment utilized in the in vivo studies
  • Ensures accurate records and logs including animal weights, medical treatments, procedural records, etc.
Animal Care
  • Administers medications and provide care to animals
  • Ensures compliance with government regulations for animals housed at this institution
Training
  • Participates actively in interdepartmental and continuing education seminars
  • Conducts and develops Investigator training seminars and wetlab sessions on an as needed or requested basis
  • Keeps up with current developments in methods, standards, and requirements for training in animal research and current laws, regulations, and policies. governing animal research, teaching, and testing
  • Assists in developing and maintaining a training program for Preclinical Services technologists.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records regarding training activities
Compliance
  • Reports on quality assurance findings with the CMS veterinary staff and develop methods to correct items of non-compliance
  • Ensures compliance at the facility, state, and federal levels governing the use of animals in research
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of compliance reviews and correspondence with CMS and investigative staff
Administrative Duties
  • Develops, implements, and conducts trainings for Standard Operating Procedures
  • Oversees Preclinical Services. Duties include maintaining inventories, ordering supplies, and dispensing supplies to investigators
  • Supervises 4-6 Preclinical Services technologists
  • Develops IACUC protocols and amendments, IBC registrations, and chemical registrations
  • Compiles study budget estimates
 


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience typically acquired through Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science, Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Science, or a related field Minimum of 5 years related experience
  • AALAS LATG and/or ASR or CVT certifications
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve to support successful animal study execution
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge and experience in laboratory animal medicine including anesthesia and procedures in a variety of small and large species
  • Strong knowledge in the regulations governing animals used in biomedical research
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and use of email
  • Capable of functioning independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with others
 


Pay Range

Minimum $76,900.00, Midpoint $96,150.00, Maximum $115,400.00
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
