Athletics Field Worker I, Medford – Facilities – (20001043)
This role will work 40 hours per week, Tuesday – Saturday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the efficient and cost effective operations, maintenance and management of all Tufts University facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space on three campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, and Boston).
A broad range of services are provided to support the University campuses including: facility maintenance by all trades, capital maintenance, information technology systems for operations (work control, time capture, preventative maintenance), energy and utilities systems, recycling and waste management, event services, residential facilities coordination, grounds maintenance and facility condition assessment and tracking. Facilities Services plays a critical role in planning for the $30M/year deferred maintenance investment.
Related functions, which require close coordination with this department, are public and environmental health and safety, campus planning and design and construction of capital and deferred maintenance projects including major repairs, renovations and new construction.
Reporting to grounds management, the Field Worker I is responsible for providing all aspects of maintenance and repair duties associated with the University’s natural and synthetic athletic fields, campus lawns and playing courts including the preparation and maintenance of campus lawns and athletic fields for all sporting and general university activities and events. Duties also include preparation of turf, dirt, lines, watering and chemical and fertilizer applications. Responsible for inspecting and testing the fields and related areas to evaluate how well campus and athletic standards are being achieved and to make changes as necessary to ensure superior quality natural and synthetic athletic fields for practice and competition. Responsible for assisting in planning project work for athletic fields and common areas by applying agronomic and administrative assistance to achieve maintenance standards and long-range planning goals. May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to Groundskeepers, Utility Workers and student workers.
The position requires experience and knowledge in the care and operation of university reel and rotary mowers and all grounds equipment including front-end loaders, tractors, skid-steers, lawn mowers, forklifts, hand and power-tools and similar vehicles/equipment as well as equipment and tools for moving materials, furniture, and supplies as needed. This position is considered essential as defined in the Tufts University Employee Handbook
Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in sports field maintenance and operations and turf management.
High School diploma or GED.
Experience and knowledge in the care and operation of University reel and rotary mowers and grounds equipment such as front-end loaders, tractors, skid-steers, lawn mowers, forklifts, hand power-tools and similar vehicles/equipment used for moving materials, furniture, supplies, Etc.
Valid Massachusetts supervisory pesticide license.
Valid US driver’s license.
Valid 2B hoister’s license.
Capable and willingness to accept responsibility to operate vehicle operations in a safe and efficient manner.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
Must have good oral and written communications skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
Must possess good time management and organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, tactfully deal with unforeseen challenges and people and work well in a team setting with other technicians and trades professionals.
Must be physically able to meet all job requirements.
Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment including use of e-mail and similar technologies for communication and be adaptable to the use of portable technologies for the logging and tracking of work activities.
Possess working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped space, during inclement weather year round.
Successful completion of CORI/SORI background and driving record background verifications
A minimum of 5-years of experience with athletic sports fields and courts for an institution for Higher Education.
Working knowledge of irrigation controls and systems; experience preparing and maintaining synthetic athletic fields
Associates degree or higher in relevant field
Trade or vocational school is strongly preferred
Experience in the use of Maximo CMMS system
