Departmental Overview

The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age. Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunityand building the capacity to respond to these challenges. CDSS connects the Data Science Education Program, School of Information, Departments of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Center for Computational Biology, and the Data Commons. The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based data science education program, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.

Working in close coordination with the Director of Advising, Faculty Director of Pedagogy (FDP), Course Coordinator, and other staff and faculty in Data Science Undergraduate Studies (DSUS), EECS and Statistics, the Course Manager has responsibilities that include providing a wide range of process improvement and course management duties and recommendations for Data Science undergraduate courses, including Data 8, 100 and 375. This position utilizes teaching and learning skills, complex coordination, and management to support instructors and student course staff. Activities will include working with the Faculty Director of Pedagogy (FDP) on course staff selection, coordinating exam administration, communicating with students about course administration and policies, and acting as a liaison for sensitive issues. Through these endeavors, the position's mission is to enhance students' academic success, provide support to the FDP, and coordinate with the DSUS team to ensure Data Science courses run efficiently. Additionally, this position may execute logistical processes within and/or across courses; for instance, coordinating administrative processes that may affect perception of course quality.

The incumbent provides assistance to the faculty and staff associated with the courses and curriculum including logistics, mechanics, administrative and academic processes, and iterative improvement in a variety of areas relevant to a student's experience in one or a sequence of our courses. When necessary, this will involve collecting pertinent data by surveying students, making data requests to the relevant departmental or course staff member, or independently searching by accessing various systems available on campus.

Responsibilities

40% Oversees Academic Student Employee (ASE) hiring for all Data courses. Prepares and shares budget worksheets with instructors to facilitate hiring, plans hiring timeline,communicates with instructors to determine hiring needs and coordinates with partner departments. Develops familiarity with hiring database in order to provide backup as needed for Course Coordinator with entering hiring details for all GSIs, Readers, and Tutors each semester for ERSO to take appropriate hiring transactions. Works with FDP to recruit suitable candidates for open positions (GSIs, readers, tutors), and develop a sustainable pipeline of future candidates. Supports FDP as needed with providing instructions and advice to new instructors on ASE hiring and selection. Develops and implements programs to onboard and train new course staff and Academic Interns. Actively participates in long-range planning for the training of student course staff members and developing programs and processes to support recruitment, appointment, and preparation, and retention. Ensures compliance with the Grad Division/campus academic student hiring policies and guidelines. Keeps abreast of union/contract changes, and communicates needed updates.

25% Utilizing expertise in teaching & learning, provides administrative oversight of Data Science courses and executes aspects of course planning and implementation. Duties may include developing and implementing new administrative processes that enhance student learning outcomes and improve the course staff experience. Provides support to the FDP with oversight of content of course evaluations including any revisions or updates. Facilitates new course approval and curriculum revisions through interaction with the Data Science Degree Programs Governance Committee, Academic Senate, and similar organizations. Supports faculty in preparation of new COCI proposals for DATA courses. Serves as point of contact in CMS. Prepares and submits Course Approval Forms to the Committee on Courses of the Academic Senate as additions, changes, or withdrawals of courses are submitted.

25% Course Operations: Consults with instructors regarding course policies, structure, and logistics. When students identify and communicate challenges, incumbent will assist faculty in devising strategies and solutions to resolve issues when possible. Assists instructors and student instructors with course-related logistics and administration such as exam administration and processing, coordinating course staff activities, scheduling, and coordinator training and review sessions. Coordinates with the Director of Advising to evaluate enrollment policies and recommend changes as needed to the faculty in order to ensure clarity and consistency in enrollment planning. Communicates with instructors regarding enrollment limits, reserved seats, permission codes, seat reservations, etc. In consultation with faculty and coordinator, ensure no-shows are dropped and replaced with the highest-priority waiting-list students. Works with Course Coordinator and lead course staff to manage student section requests and ensure students are placed into appropriate sections. Collects, analyzes, and provides statistics on Data Science enrollment trends to department management. Assesses budgetary constraints for temporary academic support needs, and provides recommendations to the Director of Advising and Director of Academic Programs in support of the department's financial operations. Responds to or redirects requests for instructional technology, non-General Assignment classroom space issues.

10% Faculty Support: Supports course instructors with student disability accommodation requests. Liaises student cases where accommodations are necessary due to special circumstances. This includes Disabled Student Program accommodations, potential make-up exam arrangementswhen warrantedand student athlete engagement. May undertake other miscellaneous exceptions involving project submission or other deliverables. Takes a lead role with student conduct cases. This may involve detection of academic dishonesty or misconduct or overseeing conduct investigation processes in concert with course instructors and GSIs. Supports and advises course instructors on cases involving students of concern or conduct violations.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of commonly used computer application programs.
  • Excellent in-depth knowledge and experience in curriculum planning processes and best practices.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills - both orally and in writing - to work with and gain trust from department senior management, faculty, external stakeholders, fundraisers and students.
  • Advanced ability to resolve unique and highly complex problems, program challenges and other issues with little or no precedent.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills along with excellent quantitative and analytical reasoning ability. Advanced ability to utilize online learning and database technology to analyze and improve program offerings.
  • Ability to train and direct other staff members to administer program operations.
  • Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting required.
  • Requires skills in judgment and decision-making.
  • Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of program undergraduate course and degree requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge on research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of specific learning styles, linguistic issues highly desirable.
  • Supervisory skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of common analytical tools used within the UC community including Excel, Google Suite, CalAnswers, Campus Solutions enrollment system, etc. preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of department, campus, and University policies, procedures, and directives preferred.
  • Masters or PhD in a related field a plus.
