The Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. Since 1979, we have offered high quality medical care, consultation, referral, and emergency veterinary services for the care of dogs, cats and exotic pets. In addition, the hospital creates a positive learning experience for Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine (TCSVM) students and student technicians about small animal medicine and surgery.
About This Role:
The Veterinary Technician for the Surgery Outpatient Service is responsible for organizing and overseeing outpatient services for the Surgery Department; collaborating with hospital leadership, clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, client services and students to provide exceptional patient care and client service.
The Outpatient Surgery Section is looking for dynamic, committed and resilient applicants to join their fast-paced working team. The Surgery Section is made up of three services: Soft Tissue, Orthopedics, and Chief. The Outpatient Surgery Veterinary Technician is responsible for managing, organizing, and overseeing the day-to-day activities that happen on an outpatient basis (appointments, drop offs and patient discharges). There may be times when support is needed at aquariums or zoos for the Chief Surgeon.
Here are some of the key skills that are relevant to this opportunity.
Clinical Administrative and Customer Service-related tasks:
Coordinate daily operations of outpatient clinic: patient and client flow from check-in to discharge
Assist with medical record documentation: completion of requests for procedures, accurate client/patient info, scanning referral paperwork, documentation of completed treatments, daily treatment plan, scheduling appointments
Prepare estimates, patient drop-off treatment plans, submit diagnostic requests and anesthesia requests
Train, mentor, and guide veterinary students and house officers on daily operations of the service and on the use of electronic clinical systems (e.g. StringSoft, PACS, etc.)
Client Support Tasks:
Serve as a reference point for clients and rDVMs, outpatient surgery service protocol and general guidance
Update rDVMs on patient admissions and daily status
Provide clients with updates regarding the status of outpatient visits
Patient Care and Technical Skills:
Assist clinicians and students with proper restraint and care of patients
Have basic skills in IV catheter placement, animal handling and restraint and phlebotomy
Have a knowledge of veterinary terminology, veterinary pharmacology and animal behavior
Understand and know normal vital parameters
