Departmental Overview

The Equity Solutions Group is the latest addition to UC Berkeley's ecosystem for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E). Under the leadership of Director Omar Qarshi, and including Carol Mimura and Richard Lyons, the Equity Solutions Group manages UC Berkeley's company stock holdings, primarily those obtained from IP licenses and access to campus facilities and services, and other commercial arrangements. The group seeks to diversify the types of transactions that result in company stock ownership, and maintain the quantity of shares owned in support of the university's mission. The team collaborates with stakeholders across the start-up equity lifecycle, from company formation, capital raises, and corporate actions to liquidity/exit events. Our partners include UC Berkeley's Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances, incubators, accelerators, hubs, and affiliated venture capital funds (e.g. the nine existing "shared-carry funds"), and also the Office of the Chief Investment Officer and the Knowledge Transfer Office at UC's Office of the President.

Responsibilities

  • Works with campus teams to prepare financial equity deal documents pertaining to the various stages of the equity lifecycle (e.g. sourcing, inception, monitoring, liquidation, waivers, assignments, SAFEs, SIAs).
  • Responsible for team's equity database maintenance, portfolio updates (e.g. valuations, corporate actions, news) and collaborations with UC teams (e.g. UC legal, accounting, IPIRA, CITRIS, BAIR, etc.) related to the equity lifecycle action items.
  • Solicits feedback from campus partners and startups regarding agreements and relationships.
  • Resolves issues when possible and escalates as appropriate.
  • Provides top customer service for all assigned partners.
  • Champions the Equity Solutions Group as an asset to the UC Berkeley startup ecosystem.
  • Works with the Director of the Equity Solutions Group to monitor the portfolio at regular intervals while updating information, ownership percentages, capitalization tables, 409a valuations, and press releases about company or industry.
  • Assists with implementing solutions to identified gaps in equity management programs and services.
  • Voices ideas and participates with subject matter expertise that may better satisfy partner needs.
  • Implements program improvements and updates to maintain service consistency.
  • Monitors compliance with internal and external investment guidelines and policies.
  • Assists with the drafting of investment policy documents, presentations, memorandums.
  • Analyzes affiliated VC fund managers' financial policies, statements, and trends while nurturing the campus-VC relationships.


Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of financial services industry, private equity ecosystem (e.g. startup formations, due diligence, deal documents, etc.), non-profit entities and educational institutions (e.g. Universities, 501c3 entities).
  • Comfortable with unstructured work environments.
  • Solid communication skills including verbal, written, and active listening. Natural political acumen and social perceptiveness.
  • High degree of patience and assertiveness (e.g. high degree of emotional intelligence).
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop working relationships within department, among campus research staff and industry partners.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation.
  • Proven organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to use software applications specific to industry alliance.
  • Ability to break down moderately-complex concepts and communicate them in an understandable way.


Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Progress toward a CFA Charter or similar.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $33.52 - $59.39.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 50% remote capability.
