Overview

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers one of the most forward-looking educational environments in dental medicine in the country. Clinic Billing Operations (CBO) supports patient care services billing for the Dental School. The Medical and Dental Billing team, along with other members of the Finance and Administration team, supports the financial management and administration of the dental school. This position reports directly to the Director, Billing Operations and works closely with all revenue cycle aspects of the School Clinics: Clinic Billing Operations, Dental Faculty Practice, Craniofacial Pain and Sleep Center, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Tufts Dental Facilities, Pre-doctoral, Postgraduate and Specialty clinical treatment areas of the School. The Postgraduate Clinics (residents) are the Specialty Clinics, which includes: Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, AEGD and Geriatric Dentistry.


What You'll Do

The Patient Financial Manager (PFM):

  • Is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all front-facing revenue cycle activities, with the goal of maximizing collections in a timely, cost-effective and compliant manner that consistently adheres to federal, state, University, Dental School and payer-specific requirements.
  • Plays a crucial collections role in the Dental School’s revenue cycle management, ensuring self-pay, deductibles, co-payments, estimated co-insurances and non-covered and benefits maxed services are paid in full at the time of services, which has a direct impact on the University’s and Dental School’s financial and billing outcomes success.
  • Provides leadership, performance management, hiring, financial management and ensures timely and compliant collections.
  • Evaluates/monitors patients’ experience, ensuring a seamless customer-focused experience, by developing patient journey mapping that focuses on providing and sharing patient-specific knowledge that enhances the patient experience, leading to optimal collections.
  • Is responsible for the day-to-day management of all aspects of the Dental School front desk operations for all floors/clinics: implements uniform front desk related policies and guidelines, while working continuously to improve internal processes.

The Patient Financial Manager's direct reports are Patient Financial Coordinators, Patient Financial Leads, Patient Registration Coordinators, Patient Registration Leads, Operating Room (OR) Coordinators and the Dental School first floor front desk patient intake team: Practice Administrator and Patient Registration Assistant I. This position’s role and responsibilities are deadline driven and requires accuracy and exceptional attention to detail. Along with the billing team, the PFM’s front desk team seeks to achieve or exceed revenue cycle operations goals, by ensuring accountability and promoting respectful, relevant and open communication across the Dental School and by establishing collaborative working relationships across all applicable supported Dental School aspects.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Associate’s Degree preferred OR High School degree/GED and 8 plus years of experience in a directly related area, such as a fast-paced dental/medical front-facing operations setting and 5+ years management/supervisory experience.
  • Needs independent judgment to make decisions and follow through to successful completion.
  • Needs to be an influencer to drive change and obtain buy-in.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Must have applicable dental/medical healthcare revenue cycle expertise and proven learning/development experience to all levels.
  • Expert knowledge of revenue cycle management (front to back), with demonstrated expertise with ADA, applicable CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Expert dental/medical patient intake processes, including pre-claims knowledge and training experience: prior authorizations, referrals and pre-treatment estimates and commercial dental/medical insurance coding/billing practices and rules, requirements and regulations, including ABNs, MassHealth waivers, and any applicable financial waiver/consents.
  • Needs to be driven, Excel knowledge, innovative, independent, self-starter, a leader, team player, analytical intelligence, exceptional attention to detail, have expert healthcare business and insurance knowledge, ability to effectively communicate technical information, aptitude and willingness to learn and to drive change.
  • Other necessary attributes/skills include,
    • exceptional interpersonal, leadership and communication skills;
    • conflict resolution;
    • retention and succession planning;
    • proficient analytical skills;
    • effective and timely problem-solving skills;
    • advanced working knowledge of billing revenue cycle processes, compliance and management, along with applicable industry terminology and applicable medical terminology.
  • Dental coder certification (CDC) required, or within 1 year of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Certified Dental Coder (CDC) applicant with 10+ years dental/medical revenue cycle operations, including medical/dental insurance coding/billing learning management, consulting and/or implementation.
  • Knowledge of third-party billing.
  • Expert knowledge of MassHealth and Medicare regulations and guidelines, and applicable CPT Codes and ICD-10 Codes.
  • Excel expert.
  • Working knowledge axiUm software.


Pay Range

Minimum $82,600.00, Midpoint $103,300.00, Maximum $124,000.00
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
