The Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST) is focused on the development of cybersecurity science and technology that will radically transform the ability of organizations to design, build, and operate trustworthy information systems for the nation’s critical infrastructure. Established as a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center (STC), TRUST is addressing technical, operational, legal, policy, and economic issues affecting security, privacy, and data protection as well as the challenges of developing, deploying, and using trustworthy systems.
Girls in Engineering (GiE) is a week-long gateway STEM program for middle school students, designed to give the participants an overview of the tremendous ability engineering has to advance society and affect positive change for the public good. Taught by UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students, the program offers the opportunity for students to work in teams and learn through hands-on activities about many types of engineering-from computer coding to building robots – inspiring them to pursue studies in engineering, math, and science. The Program Director position (job title Administrative Officer II) requires skills as a seasoned, experienced professional, with a full understanding of the needs of students underrepresented in STEM fields, utilizes best practices, campus policies and procedures to provide a full range of program support services. Independently plans, develops and implements strategies for specific programs and events, and constituency groups. Assignments typically include a wide range of external relations activities, advising students and their families, and resolving issues. Works with the department’s/school’s/college’s management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures and provides guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs, including coordinating with other Campus departments. Uses professional concepts to apply campus policies and procedures to oversee a variety of ongoing administrative operational issues. Administers defined operational program. Analyzes and resolves operational problems of moderate scope.
65% PROGRAM COORDINATION AND MANAGEMENT
Plans and implements targeted outreach programs
Advises prospective applicants and their families on necessary preparation and appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant’s goals
Utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization’s admissions criteria, helps evaluate and rank applicants for admissions;
Establishes and develops collaborative relationships with school staff, district administrators, and local community organizations as well as with students, staff, and faculty at Berkeley
Plans, organizes, and facilitates the logistics for a smooth running of the summer program including coordination of internal and external vendors and contracts.
Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students and families, such as information about the Campus, STEM best practices, academic strategies and enrichment programs.
Aids faculty and students with the development of course modules and curriculum.
Works with staff in the College of Engineering’s development office to obtain funding for the program.
20% COMMUNICATION AND REPORTING
Provides outreach to schools and the local community about programming activities.
Collects, analyzes, and evaluates data on the program.
Writes reports for funding agencies.
Manages the program’s website.
Works with campus staff and/or external vendors to create videos and press releases about the program.
Prepares PowerPoint presentations for faculty, COE Development, or funding agencies as necessary.
Serves as point of contact for parents/guardians, vendors, partner schools, and program staff
15% MENTOR, TEAM LEADER AND TRAINING
Recruits and hires temporary and/or professional staff.
Designs and implements training for temporary, and/or professional staff and volunteers.
Serves as team leader for temporary, and/or professional staff and volunteers.
Ensures that temporary, and/or professional staff and volunteers and participants are acting in accordance with UC Berkeley’s Risk Management policy detailing compliance in working with minors.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with community-based organizations, college access programs and higher education institutions.
