Position Summary
The Academic Advisor in Social Sciences Interdisciplinary will work with the Director and staff to advise and work on curricular and administrative issues in support of our undergraduate majors in the program. In this position you will act as the primary contact for current and prospective undergraduate majors in the Legal Studies (LS) and Legal Studies-JD 3+3 (LS-JD) programs.

The duties will include:

  • Review of academic progress and assistance with course selection for major and UB Curriculum requirements.
  • Provide basic information on financial aid eligibility, provide referrals to other university offices, and advise on post-graduation plans.
  • Function as the primary point of contact for non-UB students interested in the LS and LS-JD programs, providing information on curricular requirements, UB admissions procedures, and contact information for financial aid.
  • Provide advisement, information on the registration process, and program orientation to incoming LS and LS-JD transfer students.
  • Assist with advisement for Health and Human Services majors and, on an as-needed basis, for the other SSC majors: Cognitive Science, International Studies, and Urban & Public Policy Studies.
  • Develop and implement welcome and information sessions for new and potential majors each semester.
  • Revive and oversee student organizations in the majors (e.g., Health and Human Services Association).
  • Assist with degree audits and curricular development for majors and minors in the program.
  • Participate in university- and college-wide recruitment activities such as UB Fall Open House, Discovery Day, and Spring Accepted Students Days, as well as any additional on- or off-campus outreach events as needed.
  • Serve as a marshal in the annual College of Arts and Sciences commencement ceremony.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university required.
  • 2 years’ experience in a higher education setting and previous experience working directly with students as an administrator
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, teamwork, and public presentation skills are required.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills are required (MS Office: Word, Access, Excel).
  • Applicant should have demonstrated experience working with a diverse population of students and collaborating with constituents across a range of offices and functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Significant independent responsibility.
  • Experience with UB systems (ePTF, SIRI, HUB, InfoSource, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with undergraduate student populations in University setting preferred.
