The Residential Academic Success Specialist (RASS) works within the Residential Life Department and is charged with providing support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' out of classroom learning. The incumbent oversees the Residential Tutoring Program, provides support to the Resident Faculty Program, and serves as the department's academic specialist and subject matter expert in academic support services for residential students. The RASS serves as a liaison between Residential Life and campus partners to stay up to date on academic resources, policies, procedures, and practices. Involves planning, developing, implementing, and assessing programs, activities, and processes for residential students.

- Coordinates and implements all aspects of the Residential Tutoring Program.
- Serve as supervisor of record for all student staff serving as residential tutors, lead tutors, and clerks (roughly 30-40 students).
- Designs, develops, and implements selection criteria, selection procedures, orientation, training, and evaluation of undergraduate tutors whose academic expertise is utilized to tutor and to facilitate study sessions for lower division courses critical to the success of residential students.
- Develops evaluative tools and methodologies to assess the effectiveness of the overall Residential Tutoring Program.
- Ensures that all aspects of the Tutoring Program are benchmarked against campus-based and national tutoring programs, and that it at least meets campus standards.
- Provides administrative support to the Assistant Director of Assessment and Academic Success who has operational oversight of the Residential Faculty Program. Has programmatic oversight of active and passive Resident Faculty programs and events (undergraduate, graduate, and family).
- Partners with departmental colleagues to integrate Resident Faculty activities into Residential Life operations and develops strategies designed to meet Resident Faculty Program goals and learning outcomes.
- Executes an assessment plan to measure learning outcomes and report program effectiveness.
- Makes recommendations to management for changes and/or development of new activities and services.
- Establish and maintain partnership with campus and RSSP departments in the area of academic support such as the College of Letters and Science, Disabled Student Program, Student Learning Center, and Academic Resource Centers.
- Serve as content expert for academic success resources and programs, and provide consultation and training to professional and student staff. Serves on departmental and divisional committees as assigned.
- Maintains academic information on the departmental website.
- Serve in Administrator on Call rotation providing after-hour risk management support to professional staff.
- Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) for all Clery Act reportable crimes.
- Provides health and safety training, guidance on safe work practices, provides proper equipment, observes work practices and correct methods and investigates accidents. Works in a safe and responsible manner while not putting self or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards; and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Knowledge of program development, event planning, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills.
- Supervisory skills such as hiring, training, and providing feedback to student staff.
- Ability to provide pedagogical skill training to student staff and professional staff.
- Experienced knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural/linguistic issues in applying academic support to students.
- Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.
- Knowledge of academic curricula.
- Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
- Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting. Interpersonal skills.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making.
- Problem solving and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of current research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).
- Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor training program certification requirements preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is $70,000/annually.
