Overview

Tufts Comparative Medicine Services (Tufts CMS) in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center in Boston and Tufts University in Medford. Tufts CMS is also obligated to ensure that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The management and operation of the animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program. All centralized facilities are located within a 2-block radius, either in Boston or Medford and house in excess of 40,000 animals daily.


What You'll Do

The Animal Care Technologist is responsible for monitoring health and providing clinical care to laboratory animals in Veterinary Services (VS). The animals are evaluated daily in our large animal housing facility and at a minimum weekly in our rodent and zebrafish colonies at our Boston Campus and per assigned on the Medford campus. The technologist will follow the procedures, guidelines, and policies approved by these institutions. The Animal Care Technologist will also be responsible for regular training for research investigators, ensuring compliance of animal research, and assist with technical services, as needed. The Animal Care Technologist serves on a weekend on-call schedule for animal health and facility emergencies. On an as needed basis, the animal care technologist may be assigned to perform health checking or husbandry related tasks on the Medford campus. 


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Associates Degree in Veterinary Sciences and 3-5 years Veterinary Technician or laboratory animal medicine experience.
  • AALAS certifications recommended, and technician will be required to achieve Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within 3 years of employment.    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor's Degree in a related field, and/or Certified Veterinary Technician and 1-3 years of experience in related field with some level of AALAS certification.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Comfortable using the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with investigative staff, and communicate animal health issues, compliance issues, training, facility issues, etc. in a professional collegial manner with members of the investigative and Tufts CMS staff.
  • This individual would work effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrate good work habits.
  • Show flexibility and initiative.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Monday - Friday between 7:30am and 5pm - 40 hours + per week, flexible. Occasional Weekends, Holidays, and evening including on-call responsibilities. 


Pay Range

Minimum $21.80, Midpoint $25.95, Maximum $30.10
 

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
