Departmental Overview

The mission of the Division of Academic Planning is to facilitate excellence in research and education at UC Berkeley. We oversee the overall academic direction of the university, steward space in university facilities, and facilitate strategic international partnerships. In fulfilling these goals, we collaborate closely with the schools, colleges, departments, and organizations across the campus, looking for synergies across organizational and disciplinary boundaries, and supporting the growth and development of emerging academic disciplines.

  • Directs, plans, organizes, and/or performs the highest level of academic planning services for the campus and/or University-wide executive leaders, faculty, and administrative staff.
  • Directs and leads all academic programming committees by providing expert analyses and guidance related to academic space standards.
  • Advises executive leadership on space allocations, standards, and practices.
  • Documents program committee decisions.
  • Guides, oversees, and/or implements space planning decisions by negotiation and collaboration.
  • Oversees and tracks the development and implementation of space planning decisions.
  • Ensures space planning decisions are implemented as designed.
  • Directs and leads the highest-level of academic space planning.
  • Deeply analyzes campus' space needs, develops scenario planning for space moves, creates in-depth surge plans, provides expert guidance to the VPAP and COS of AP, collaborates closely with AP's space management team and counterpoints across campus to negotiate space moves.
  • Represents AP on various committees related to capital strategies, capital renewal, and space allocation.
  • Provides expert-level guidance to campus regarding space allocations based on current State and University guidelines and standards.
  • Develops and leads campus strategies for understanding space utilization.
  • Develops and leads divisional strategy for documenting current space allocation, surge plans, and MOUs.
  • Collaborates in the long-term strategy of space data collection, storage, and reporting.
  • Participates in team meetings and committees related to space data.
  • Stays abreast of national, state, and UC specific guidelines and standards pertaining to space allocation, space utilization, capital strategies, capital renewal, facilities management, and other related topics.

Required Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge/skills in all aspects of city/campus planning, architecture, other planning-related fields, including knowledge/skills in large-scale site planning.
  • Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including expert level political acumen and negotiation skills.
  • Expert skills in building, maintaining and nurturing strong professional relationships to achieve short and long-range campus development goals.
  • Expert analytical and project management skills.
  • Expert knowledge of or ability to learn the campus, including its architectural history, short and long-range development plans, infrastructure and current, on-going and future design and construction plans.

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City Planning or other planning related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a planning related field and/or equivalent experience as a space planner.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $120,000.00 - $150,000.00.
