Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 250 regular faculty members, 1,800 graduate students and 3,200 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole exceed $230 million annually. Research expenditures amounting to approximately 20% of campus total are administered separately by the Engineering Research Support Organization.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is an academic department within the College of Engineering. Academic positions include 41.50 tenure track faculty, 4 adjunct professors, 5 professors of the Graduate School, and approximately 8 temporary instructors, 100+ visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows. The department serves approximately 356 graduate majors, including Ph.D., approximately 170 Masters of Engineering Professional Degree students, and 675 undergraduate major and double majors.

The Aerospace Engineering (AeroEng) major is the first new major sponsored by the College of Engineering in a decade. The AeroEng major will enroll the inaugural class of 40 first year students in Fall 2022, an initial transfer class of 20 students in Fall 2024, and ramp up the program to a steady enrollment of 250-300 students within four years. The new major will involve at least four new required courses, including two laboratory-based design courses, which will be developed, staffed, and appropriately endowed with space within the next few years. It will involve a host of new specialty courses covering the full range of aerospace engineering. The new major will be initially housed within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, along with the current Aerospace Engineering minor.

The Aerospace Engineering Student Services Advisor will provide the full range of student services for the new Aerospace Engineering B.S degree and the existing minor. The position will work closely with the faculty program lead and director of student affairs to launch and sustainably grow the new major via prospective/new student advising and web- and social media-based communications. The incumbent will play a key community-building role, working to ensure high-touch, high-tech advising of the inaugural student cohorts. Will independently advise students and resolve student services-related issues on the full range of academic and administrative issues inherent within the program. Works closely with program and college faculty, department and student services and scheduling teams and the Engineering Student Services (ESS) office within the College of Engineering to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the office of the registrar, the central scheduling office, or student affairs and the student learning center. May administer funds for student programs.

55% Undergraduate Student Services and Academic Advising:
Applying professional student services and counseling concepts, provides the full range of student services, academic advising, and guidance on all student related matters to undergraduate Aerospace Engineering (AeroEng) majors and minors, in collaboration with faculty program lead, the College of Engineering departments, the Mechanical Engineering management and curriculum team, and Engineering Student Services (ESS) and campus units.

Advises faculty on program / departmental /school / college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree / program completion; maintains student records and database; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.

Coordinates and tracks curriculum planning and requirements in conjunction with faculty program lead, college departments and Mechanical Engineering scheduling team; enrollment manager for primary AeroEng courses; ensures students are aware of all cross-listed and/or non-AeroEng courses that count toward the major or minor degree.

Responsible for interpreting department / college /campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination. Utilizes full scope of advising/counseling skill set to support students of concern, students in distress, and/or students in academic difficulty.

Advises department / college / school students on the general career/job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer or graduating students.

20% Programming/Events:
Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as Cal Day and job fairs. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the major or academic strategies and enrichment programs. Participates in Golden Bear Orientation (GBO) and Golden Bear Advising (GBA) activities and presentations. May develop other student programming to address the evolving needs of our student population. 15% General administrative support for the Aerospace Engineering major, including coordinating communications between the faculty program lead, the instructional faculty, the college/campus administration, and the broader community, and assisting the faculty program lead with
routine daily administrative tasks. Pulls data, creates reports, tracks and archives program activities, policies and procedures.

10% Develops and updates content related to the major and minor programs that would appear in campus and community websites and other media of communication, including social media; maintain and moderate student listserv; publicize program announcements and updates.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of student services and academic advising. Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office suite. Knowledge of University-specific computer / software application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures pertaining to undergraduate education, curriculum, grading, and student conduct, confidentiality (FERPA) and related areas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Skills in service orientation, active listening, and critical thinking.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a busy, high volume environment. Strong data, tracking, reporting and archiving skills.
  • Strong skills in understanding and effectively utilizing all news / media mediums including broadcast news, the internet, social media and other emerging technologies.
  • Strong technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Bachelor's degree / or equivalent experience / training.
